Embarrased to confess and my first time

Hi everyone,

I had a problem with masturbation and porn. Now i have it under control and would like to go to confession so I can make it to heaven one day. I saw a home video the other day of some deceased family members and thought that they would be disappointed in me and I was sad if i would never see them again. Since then i resolved i would go to confession, which is this evening.

I have never been before, my family is catholic but has never been to confession. wasnt brought up with it, but this whole mortal sin thing has me scared so i want to be absolved.

what are the steps with confession? And what area of the church is the confessional in?

I have already emailed the priest and conveyed my sense of anxiety and asked him if it would be private or face to face. he can only hear me so that helps me.

Also if I have been receiving the eucharist while being in mortal sin, should i confess that?

Any tips?

I know i am doing the right thing but its hard…😊
 
I think you go into a confession booth and whatever priest is there will listen to you then absolve you? Its not the same thing as actually dealing with the sin and what leads to repentance. From my experience, most priests do not actually emphasize confession like St. Padre Pio would. God bless
 
Yes, if you have been receiving the Eucharist in mortal sin you need to confess that also.

Jesus says “Be not afraid!”. When you confess to the priest, who is in Persona Christi, just imagine that you are confessing directly to our merciful Lord. It is Him!
 
First off, so many people feel anxiety about situations like this. So I’m sure the priest will understand completely. You’re going to feel sooo much better once this weight is lifted off you, trust me.

As for the steps to confession, luckily my nun handed out cards about this so I’ll copy that whole thing.

Preparation:
Think of your sins.
Tell God you are sorry.
Try not to sin again.

In the confessional:
Begin with the sign of the Cross.
Tell Father how long it has been since your last Confession (in your case tell him it’s your first).
Tell your sins.
Listen to Father’s advice.
Pray the Act of Contrition.
Receive absolution (forgiveness).
Thank Father.
Leave the confessional and do the Penance given.

And if you don’t know the Act of Contrition Father will walk you through it. But if you want to try to learn it, it is…

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart.
In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things.
I firmly intend, with your help to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us.
In his name, my God, have mercy.

I’m pretty sure that where the confessional is depends on the church, so I can’t help you with that.

Receiving the Eucharist in the state of mortal sin is a sin. So, YES, confess it.

Keep in mind that withholding mortal sins in confession is also sin and makes the confession invalid. Also, if you do not intend on giving it your all to attempt to change your sinful ways then those sins are not forgiven.

Try to relax, confess all mortal sins, and all the venial ones you can remember. Then receive absolution (which is one of the greatest feelings) and then follow God’s will. It’ll be fine, but just to make sure I’ll say a prayer for you. 😉
 
Be aware that nobody is confessing anything that’s not deeply embarassing, so you are not alone in that. Chances are pretty good that the priest himself has at some time in life made some confession related to sexuality or if not that, something else he would consider equally or more embarassing. He is not there to judge you but rather to absolve you and help you grow closer to your faith and God.
 
Well, I went to confession but people took too long and I was turned away. Will have to go back on Saturday. I guess god wants me to reflect even more on my sins for a little while longer so that i truly will be forgiven.

It wasn’t as scary as i thought. I didn’t confess, but by standing in line i did see the set up and did not seem near as intimidating as i thought.

My prayers are with you as also I do sometimes struggle with some form of impurity too. I am sure the priest has heard it all in a variety of words to describe those types of sins.

God bless you, and I am sure you will do fine when going to Confession. I know after I go, a burden is lifted spiritually for me due to the priest’s advice, saying the act of contrition, absolution from the priest, and saying my penance.
 
Congratulations on summoning the courage to stop and confess! I had the exact same problem a good while back, but eventually I just felt so ashamed, hypocritical, and just plain filthy that I forced myself to stop, acknowledge my sins, and go to my parish priest. I spent about an hour and a half talking with him about the problems I had faced and how hard it was to overcome them (in my opinion, face-to-face makes it easier, actually). If you can summon the will to really examine yourself and what you believe, it gets much easier. Verbalizing your sins in confession really takes a weight off your shoulders, and absolution was positively blissful…I felt so relieved and hopeful. Christ’s gift of the sacrament of Penance is truly a wonderful one.

And again, congratulations on turning your life around like that! It’s a horrible thing to be enslaved to, and breaking free of it has been the best thing that happened to me in many, many years. Now if only I could stop my (thankfully infrequent) outbursts of profanity as well…:o

Life is a work in progress! Just keep trying your very hardest to live like Christ, always sincerely resolving to better yourself, and you will turn out just fine. It’s hard, but suffering is a good teacher, if a harsh one.
 
Oh, and one more tip (I don’t know how much trouble you are having coping with temptation, I’m just speaking from my own experience) - daily prayer and Mass attendance are HUGE helps when trying to stay away from the near occasion of sin. It helps keep you ever mindful of God’s presence, and meditating on Christ’s example helps you to stay away from that which is sinful.

Just a quick suggestion if you can work this out with your local Priest. If this is your first confession, it is probably going to be a little longer and take some more time than some other confessions the Priest hears. Check with him and see if you can set up an appointment for your confession outside of the regular confession times at the parish. That way you will have the time you need to confess all you need to, and the Priest will be able to carve out the time in his schedule to accomodate you. You are in my prayers and God love you.

What you are telling us tell the same thing to the priest and he will be gentle with you.
Also if I have been receiving the eucharist while being in mortal sin, should i confess that?

What you are telling us tell the same thing to the priest and he will be gentle with you.

Yes, tell the priest you went to Communion when you were in mortal sin; if you do not,
your confession will be invalid. Since you wrote him and told hiim, why donn’t you just go face to face–he will be very gentle with you
