Thanks, friend!!
I have thought about saying a Hail Mary when I feel the urge to sin this particular sin.
I think I will try that.
One of the triggers is my preteens attitude with me.
He is your typical 12 yr old…sarcastic.
Very sweet at times but still sarcastic.
So even though he is a trigger I better not remove him!!!
LOL
But seriously I don’t want to point the finger.
I am the one choosing to sin and I think I should accept responsibility because I am making the choice.
So thanks again…I think some extra prayers may help!!!
Karen
Get a rubber band to put around your wrist and snap it everytime you think of committing this ‘venial’ (how can you be sure?) sin.

Sin is horrible, not just because it keeps us out of heaven but because it offends God. You shouldn’t get discouraged - habits are hard to break - but I think using every means at your disposal, including confession, is a good idea.

I am hoping there is a way to break the habit.
Karen,

One thing I’ve found useful is to look at the Cardinal Sin that this venial sin is most related to, and then ask the Lord to help increase your capacities for the corresponding Virtue and Gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Gift of Knowledge
Virtue of Faith
Sins: Covetousness and Avarice

Gift of Understanding
Virtue of Hope
Sin: Gluttony

Gift of Piety
Virtue of Charity/Love
Sin: Lust

Gift of Wisdom
Virtue of Prudence
Sin: Pride (Self-worship)

Gift of Counsel
Virtue of Justice
Sin: Envy

Gift of Fear of the Lord
Virtue of Temperance
Sin: Sloth

Gift of Fortitude
Virtue of Fortitude
Sin: Anger

A venial sin that you can’t stop doing can seriously interfere with your relationship with God. It is quite likely that Satan is working on this weakness and hoping to chip away at it until he can lead you to more serious sin. You should be resolved to beat it. When you feel the temptation coming, remove yourself from the situation, or try to ignore it, turn your mind to something else. Do not become resigned that you are going to commit the sin again (I’ve been there) because then you are finished before you even start fighting!

Another resource that I have found helpful is a book titled How To Resist Temptation by Fr. Francis J Remler.

God Bless,
Mike

Dear Karen,

Looks like you already have great advice and that it has been well received by you. Therefore, I only have 2 general comments.

(1) In the examination of conscience that I generally use, one of the first questions asked is “Do I have any habits of sin?”

(2) The reception of the Eucharist, while in the proper state of Grace, has the power to forgive venial sins. See 1393 of the CCC link here : vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p2s2c1a3.htm#1393

Karen,
It is VERY WISE of you not to place to much trust in the anonymity of the Internet. What I hope the previous poster was suggesting was that you understand that we all feel embarrassed by our sins and that no one person’s sin is necessarily any worse than that of any other person’s. I sincerely hope that the previous poster was not seriously encouraging you to “confess” your sin on this forum.

I would suggest employing an AA principle to help you. “One day at a time”. In other words when this sin tempts you focus on just making it through today. I know for myself that I have to break that down further sometimes. Sometimes I just pray “Lord help me make it through the next few seconds!”. By focusing on just this one day the task of avoiding sin and temptation is not so monumental. This principle is also very biblical as we can see in the Gospel of Matthew Chapter 6 Verse 34.

One thing that helped me put my sins in perspective was reading 1 Timothy Chapter 1 verses 15 and 16. If you would like to know exactly what Paul was referring to then look at Acts chapter 7 verses 56-59…remebering that Paul, before his conversion was Saul of Tarsus.

God Bless you.
Thanks, friend!
I will keep trying to take it “one day at a time”.
I was doing pretty good until today when I got overly stressed.
Now I am back I think.
I will look up those verses…thanks.
And thanks for your support.
My favorite parable is the parable of the lost sheep.

I think it is venial.
I’m going to ask my priest when I get a chance.
That rubber band is a good idea…thanks!
