For several reasons unrelated to the Church, I’ve been uninvolved with my church for the past few months. I’ve asked God’s forgiveness, and now I’m ready to go confess 4 months worth of sins. A lot of them are really embarrassing.

How can I prepare for this? I’m so nervous.

It is embarrassing, but the priest has probably heard it before. When I came back to the Church, I had 40 yrs of emarrasmnet to confess so I feel for you.

But it sure feels good to get right with the Lord. Suck it up and then try to remember that feeling the next time temptation comes along.

Good luck and God bless

Patrick

This priest might have heard confessions from prisoners. No matter what you got, it ain’t nothing on them! 😛

It may seem embarrassing to confess but the priest has probably heard it before and well… That’s your punishment. Lol

Start with the most embarassing one. Practice saying it aloud in advance (when you’re alone, obviously:p): “Bless me, father, for I have sinned. It’s been ____ since my last confession. I committed the sin of ______, ___ times.” Take a deep breath and get it all out in a rush. After that, the rest will be easier.

And Phoage, Rascalking, and Domandcarols are all right: the priest has heard it all before. Never mind all the embarassing things you’ve done; think about all the disgusting things you’re heard of but would never do. Because there are other people in this world who have confessed those deeds. You’re embarassed because you kissed a woman not your wife? Others have committed adultery. You can’t believe you’ve committed adultery? Others have worked as prostitutes. You’re ashamed because you’re a prostitute? Others have engaged in the slave trade. Or the drug trade. Or committed murder.

God grants priests the grace to handle whatever gets confessed to them. True, some of them don’t use the grace gracefully (Ha!), and some of them slip occasionally. But that’s Jesus in there with the two of you, and He already knows what you did.

The more ghastly the sin…the greater the humility in confessing it. Fear not, no matter what your sins, the priest has heard them all before you.

The sad reality is that you are probably NOT the greatest sinner or the LEAST, so join the multitude of mediocre, grubby little folks that constitute the bulk of the Church.

I say don,t worrey, because what sins you tell the Priest, are between God ,him and you.
Never hold back, tell all you can remember, and truly be sorrey for them and try not to commit them again, If you do,because your week ,just go back, another week. For Jesus loves us when we go to confession, It shows we truly LOVE him,for all the suffering that he did on the Cross to save us sinners. Amen.

Say them out loud to yourself and then think of something humourous–a joke, a scene from your favourite film, etc. Something that will make you laugh every time.

all sins are embarrassing, or should be
there is nothing, but nothing, you can say to the priest that will shock him, and in acy case, you are speaking to Jesus who already knows, better than you yourself, what you did, why.

I used to feel the same way.

A couple of years ago, I was on a retreat and went to Confession and was having a hard time “coming clean”.

Suddenly, the priest interjected and asked me “Did you kill the Pope?”

I was stunned. “No!”, I blurted out.

“Well”, he said, “then you won’t be telling me anything I haven’t heard before, so relax.” 😃

very good i enjoyed that although i think he may need to be a bishop before he can give absolution for that sin, automatic excomunication:D

Thanks. He is an awesome priest. That comment totally disarmed me (which I’m sure was his intent) and enabled me to get over my embarrassment.

Thanks to all of you! I meant to reply before but apparently I forgot to. These were all very helpful.

This is awesome! So funny, thank you for sharing!

Probably the one good thing is that if you feel embarrassment for the sin then you also feel remorse and are ready to accept penance and forgiveness from God for those sins.

I never had a face to face confession until 2005 and it was a time when I confessed one of my most embarrasing things I have ever done in my Catholic life. I cried for days before I had confession and when I confessed I went to a church I never go to and I instantly felt as if someone had taken a ton of bricks off of me.

What I’m saying is be fervetn in your sorrow, ask God to help you make the confession, and go and sit in church for a few minutes before you go to confession. It will relax you and put you in a mindset that is so ready to ask for God to forgive you andreceive his blessing and love.

Good luck and I’ll say a prayer for you all goes well.

Yeah, especially if you go to confession to an older priest, they’ve likely heard it all, from Johnny stealing cookies and pulling his sister’s hair to teenaged girls confessing to wearing immodest clothes, to reformed career criminals confessing to bank robberies, murders, rapes and child molestation. Whatever you’ve got, the priest has likely heard a – pardon the pun – hell of a lot worse things!

God already knows exactly what you did. He knows us better than we know ourselves. So, by not going to confession, we aren’t hiding anything from Him. We are denying ourselves the grace to grow closer to Him though. The process of telling those Sins to a priest who acts in the place of Christ, is indeed a humbling one. Which is good for us. Pray for humility. Pray for the priest who will hear your confession. Then just go. And keeping going on a regular basis.

God bless and Pax Christi

WOW! Great priest and one who seems to understand and relate to the human condition better than many others. You are lucky to have such a wonderful confessor.
