As you may know, tomorrow is Ember Wednesday and on that day you can fast. I will be fasting and I’d like you to join me. I will only be eating one meal and drinking only water. I will do the same on Ember Friday, this week. So the discussion for this thread is this - Are you fasting these days? What are some of your tips? Some of my tips is to drink a lot of water. If you’ve never fasted, you should try it on Wednesday! Have a great day everybody.

I started abstaining from meat on Fridays like I used to. It is incredibly hard for me to fast for some reason. My head hurts and I get faint. I need to start doing it more though.

Thanks for the reminder. I sometimes don’t notice Ember days especially since they always seem to occur during major holidays or the end of a school term when I’m freaking out about final examinations.

Did you forget to mention Ember Saturday, or do you personally only fast on the Wednesday and Friday?

I would like to know which days are days of fastening. The days that I have known to be days of fastening, are Fridays during Lent. I would like to be a better Catholic and practice my faith better

It will depend on where in the world you are. Here in the United States the only days of mandatory fasting are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The only days of mandatory abstinence from meat are Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent.

The fast and abstinence disciplines have become relaxed over the years, and some Catholics prefer to keep other days of fast and abstinence. It used to be that one was required to fast and abstain on the four sets of Ember Days of the year (four sets of Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, being the week of the 3rd Week of Advent, the 1st Week of Lent, the week after Pentecost, and the week after the Exaltation of the Cross). These are optional periods of fast and abstinence.

OH, thank you for bringing this to our attention. I recall Ember Days from my youth, but hear nothing about it in recent years. The days are supposed to be Wed, Fri. and Sat, I believe. I will join you in a moderate fast as I am not used to it and am getting old now. I will eat very small meals, no snacks and no pleasure foods, such as soda, coffee, etc. I’ll stick to water and a very small amt of food three times a day tomorrow, Friday and sAturday. It’s good for us to fast, realizing our own weaknesses and doing penance for our sins and those of our loved ones or people who have no one to pray for them. 🙂

The wife and I really like the Ember Days. Our menus are already planned. 😃

Yep, I observe the four Ember fasts - or at least I have for the past few years!

For those who are curious what’s involved, the universal norm was fasting and complete abstinence on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. This is what I follow, but given the predominantly American readership of CAF: in the US, Wednesday and Saturday were changed to days as fasting and partial abstinence (meat allowed once, at the principal meal).

I drink some juice if I start feeling weak or headachy.

Well that’s okay because you are feeling yucky and if you don’t drink something to keep you moving then you’d feel worse so you are allowed to do that.

You should start off with eating two small meals and one normal meal. Then as you get better advance to one small meal and one normal. Then you go into expert mode and only have one normal meal. If you are good enough with that then you can have no food. That’s the hardest and I hope I will eventually get to there. So far I can skip all meals but dinner. I feel like I could go the whole day but I haven’t tried it yet.

I’m glad for reminding you of these days.-- Moderate fasting is what most people do.-- I do a little more extreme and only eat one normal meal (dinner).-- You have some good points!
