Embroidery for First Communion Dress

I don’t know if this is the appropriate place for this topic? If not, someone please re-direct me to the appropriate place, if there is one on this forum.

I have done some searching on the internet but, I’m not having much luck finding suitable hand embroidery patterns that would be small enough to use on a First Communion dress.

I am in LOVE with this dress for my daughter’s First Communion this Spring:

But, I would like to use a different design for the embroidery than what comes with the dress, one for the occassion of First Communion. I was thinking something like a Chalice with Host? or Holy Spirit Dove with Host? or even a Cross with Easter Lilies?

Also, I am very experienced with sewing but I have NO experience with Embroidery! I am signed up to take an Embroidery I class this weekend and another one in December. I am “handy” with such things and I believe I will be able to pick it up in time to be proficient by Easter Vigil Mass BUT… I should probably not attempt anything too difficult.

If anyone knows where I could get a pattern, please respond!

most hand embroidery can be resized to the size you want. Copiers at libraries (or even your local sewing shop can do this). If you are handy with a computer (scanner/printer) you could even resize the pattern yourself. Then you have to trace the pattern onto the transfer paper with the special pens. It is a bit of an investment as you are unfamiliar with embroidery, it might be better to find someone with a special machine.

Be wary of getting yourself into anything too difficult. Patterns with french knots, and a lot of satin stitch will easily get you into trouble as a first timer. Maybe look for a cross stitch pattern transfer, as cross stitch (especially if it is one color) tends to be easier than regular embroidery.

This is a digitized pattern, which can be used with various machines that do embroidery. You could buy the pattern and have someone with a machine do the embroidery for you.

oh! I love the chalice with the host on the first line of the second link you provided! The one that is second from the left. That looks fairly easy also. THANK YOU!

oh! I love her designs also! I really like the Chi Rho design (5th row down, first on left) but, I also like the Fleur de Lis on the same row (second from right) and the Easter Lilies on the 3rd row. And the dove on the first row! 🙂

I’m going to have a hard time choosing now that you ladies have given me such great ideas!

thank for your advice. I hope I can eventually learn to make the pretty french knots and satin stitches but, hopefully I can find something I can do that will be beautiful and simple.
 
Any artistic person you know could draw out a design for you to embroider, too. Also a local machine embroiderer could do any design for you. I think its lovely you want to do it yourself! I am sure Our Lady hand embellished her Son’s important outfits so you can think of her, smiling down on you, while you do it. 🙂
