Human beings, being mammals, do not lay eggs. This fact, known to most school children, is frequently forgotten by those in the media reporting on advancements in embryo and cloning research. The latest example of media misrepresentation on embryo research comes from Saturday’s Los Angeles Times which ran the headline, “Abortion opponents push for ‘personhood’ for eggs.”

I agree. We are not dealing with fertilized eggs, we are dealing with human beings. I would prefer that we refer to them as people rather than fertilized eggs.

I see no issues with this very informative article aside from the sensationalist title. No where that I can see in the article does the reporter cite any embryologist as saying "there are no such things as ‘fertilized eggs’ ". In fact, the one scientist she does cite actually makes the pro-life position:* "the German zoologist Oskar Hertwig showed definitively that penetration of a spermatozoon into an ovum was the beginning of independent life and that the terms “conception” and “fertilization” are therefore interchangeable terms. ".*

Now - if she wanted to say that the main stream media and pro-abortion supporters are the ones who have caused this language problem which has diluted America’s understanding of what is actually happening in the womb, then I would not have an issue. But she chose a sensationalist title for her story that is just as misleading as she is saying some pro-abortion proponents are.

We are constantly telling members of this forum to “get it right” and “cite your sources” “be accurate” - just because this is a pro-life reporter and a Catholic news outlet does not mean that they should not be held to the same standard.

In addition - the point regarding the use of proper terminology is spot on. It’s not an egg. To say that it’s not an egg does not mean that there is no person present at the moment of conception. Using proper terminology does not negate the fact that life is there. There is nothing wrong with using proper words - words mean things, they need to be used properly. Sadly, the MSM and others have misused words to the point that if we were to try to use proper terminology the point would be lost. So we are stuck with “egg”.

That all being said - I like the article and what she’s trying to say. I just strongly object with how she is presenting the information with, what I feel, is an inappropriate and inaccurate (according to the content of the article) title.
