Please, all of you who have children slated for first Holy Communion this weekend or next, run out to the liquor store and buy a bottle of wine, preferably the cheap stuff so it tastes sour. Let your child practice sipping wine from a glass that approximates the weight and feel of a chalice. Coach them so they know what to expect, and to take a tiny sip of the Precious Blood. Make sure they know exactly what they are receiving in the Sacrament and why. “EEEEW” is not an appropriate response for a child’s first reception of Communion. thank you.

:rotfl: I never would have thought of that! Maybe in most places they give the kids a taste-test during their instruction time?

we are not allowed to give the kids actual wine, we used cranberry juice because it is bitter, but that is only once or twice, the parents need to have the child practice at home more frequently. Same thing goes for reception of the Sacred Host. Even though we practiced once a week for the last 6 weeks we still have kids wandering away holding the host or doing the popcorn maneuver. Problem is, most of them never see their parents receiving, so have no model to follow.

True, but they’re not using it for the Eucharist. They appear to be using it to practice with the kids.

also I am not a priest and cannot confect the Eucharist, this is for practice purposes only. For that matter, wheat thins and unsalted oyster crackers are not valid matter either, but in our parish we are not allowed to use unconsecrated hosts for practice either. We try to get them used to something dry and tasteless so they don’t make faces. My point is that CCD class has another purpose, instruction, and we don’t have the luxury of a lot of time to practice the behaviors the children should be learning at Mass with their parents, by observation, and at home.

In our parish, they allowed the children to practice with UNconsecrated bread and wine. The children fully understood that it was unconsecrated. The first communion mass was absolutely special and beautiful.

Our parish did the same thing Joshua. It’s a great idea, Annie, for all those who didn’t get a chance.

I was at practice yesterday and the kids had a problem with bowing their heads and then saying amen. Very cute. They’ll be masters in no time. 👍

Peace,
Jen
