Emergency Question

Hi!

This is a quick question and an emergency (close time to going to church or not). My son has hand, foot, mouth disease which is contagous within the first week (this is day 3-4). I guess I just need to confirm that in this case, it would considered to be ok NOT to go to Church today without it being a mortal sin? My husband is overseas and there’s no one I could leave my son with. Just checking…

It’s okay to miss Mass if it is necessary for you to take care of someone else. I assume your son is too young to be left home alone.

Skip Mass in this case - falls under illness/care of infants etc…
My kids seem to pick up a case of this every year around this time and as school starts. We keep them home until they are no longer contagious to others.
Taking care of your family, and that includes the Church family, is a valid reason to skip Mass.
If you can, try to attend a weekday Mass, and set aside some time for prayer.

Of course you must stay home. This is a common sense issue.

Hand, foot and mouth is highly contagious, and likely for longer than you think; we have sad experience with this. My daughter caught it from her 2 year old last year, and they both had horrific cases.
