Can an EMHC serve while in a state of mortal sin? Let’s say they have an appointment for confession after Mass
No. If you can’t receive communion you shouldn’t serve. I’ve had to get a replacement now and again. It’s humiliating but it has to be done. The year I was on a schedule serving as an EMHC was the year I went to confession the most .Can an EMHC serve while in a state of mortal sin? Let’s say they have an appointment for confession after Mass
You don’t need to receive Communion to usher, so you shouldn’t need to be in a state of grace to do the job.what about ushering? does the same apply?
I’ve never seen the requirements for an usher. But I know an usher doesn’t get put in a position where he is in public view refusing communion so I wouldn’t think it would apply.what about ushering? does the same apply?
Ushers really aren’t anything at all so it really wouldn’t matter what or who they are or what they have done. They are another group that I really don’t see a need for. We don’t know when to approach the Altar for Communion and need to be fed into a line? We don’t know where to sit? Or maybe we need someone to stroll by and try to shake our hands as we try to pray prior to Mass.I know that priests can say Mass, even if they are in a state of mortal sin, if they have no opportunity to go to confession beforehand, but they need to make an Act of Perfect Contrition before doing so.
EMHCs similarly are in a position where they need to recieve Communion themselves to be able to minister, but then they aren’t essential to the Mass, which can proceed without an EMHC, whereas the priest saying it is essential.
If it were me, I’d just go in early and ask the priest to hear my confession before Mass instead of after - it’s an emergency so he should be willing.
Our ushers are also trained in dealing with emergencies; who calls 911, how to use the automatic defibrillator, etc., as well as watching the parking lot for fly-by windshield leafleting. Our ushers take up the collection and give out bullitins after mass. They do their greetings in the Narthex before people start praying. And they help the handicaped with the doors. Maybe they are unnessary, but they do make things go smoother, I appreciate their ministry.
I agree, and ours do the same things as yours do, including helping the handicapped get out of their cars, and assisting them and others. Plus, they take care of emergencies, and are trained to quickly get people out of the church in an orderly fashion, such as when we had an electrical fire one Sunday during Mass. They did a fine job with that one, preventing panic and getting everyone out safely. I appreciate all the work the ushers do.Our ushers take up the collection and give out bullitins after mass.
