Chickamauga:
After having talked to the Deacon I will continue as an EMHC.
But I am not an EMHC because I wanted attention or status. Far from it. If I had the chance to go back to just being a face in the crowd I would. But I was asked to do it primarily because the priest and the deacon both noticed my particular devotion to the Eucharist. That’s what I get for showing up at every exposition of the Blessed Sacrement. I will not be stuck doing it every single Sunday… every other Sunday for the time being. Yeah, I’m new, but nobody “old” seems to be willing to step up to the plate, unfortunately.
May the Lord grant you blessings and peace for your devotion.

I keep reading this assertion here, but am still waiting for the slightest skerrick of evidence to justify this uncharitable vilification of the motives of the great majority of EMHCs. Every EMHC I know was reluctant to take up the role as they felt unworthy, but did so after repeated written invitations and a personal request by the parish priest.
Agreed – I’d never even considered it until our priest came out and basically begged for folks to step up and help out with mass; everythign from EMHC to setting up the fellowship hall and cleaning up after the coffee and donuts to transporting canned goods to the local food pantry…you name it. They called within 3 days of filling out the “I would be willing to” cards…I too thought the “80-90% are needing validation” to be a bit harsh…but when it comes to EMHC on these forums, I’ve found more harsh words than kind…sadly enough

It’s been my experience that perhaps 80-90% of all EMsHC are people that seek attention and status and they use the Church to feed their needs. That’s why problems exist – people are worried about themselves rather than the Sacrifice of Jesus on the Altar.
Dude…I’ve seen this before in other discussions. Clearly this woman didn’t sign up for the reason you cite above, so why cite it?

In my parish we have the extraordinary ministers at every mass. Weekdays usually 5 of them and Sundays 8 10 or so. 2 of them are Sisters, 2 are Deacons and the others are of the type that wear outsize scapulars around 4x4 inches in size outside their clothing and have religious medals pinned everywhere. They meet as a group around the altar when the gifts are brought up and kind of arrange themselves in a circle around the Priest while he does the consecration. I don’t think they would give anybody else a chance to do it, they seem pretty territorial. I’ve never seen anyone else do it except for the same group. Altogether there are about 15 of them…
