A wonderful thing appears to have happened today in the parish where I attend daily Mass. I noticed the (pretty much unnecessary - can’t have everything) EMHC waiting in her pew until the Agnus Dei was complete before she entered the sanctuary. This is a definite change of procedure from the previous way of doing things - I think they made their move at the Sign of Peace.

I remembered reading in Sunday’s bulletin that all the liturgical groups were having their annual meetings this week - lectors, EM’s & ushers. On the way out, I checked and found that the EM meeting was last night - and today the change was implemented!

The priest in charge of liturgy is a great young guy who loves traditional things and apparently also loves obedience to the norms! He has gorgeous silk vestments in a modified gothic style which he wears every day and each set has a matching CHALICE VEIL!! When was the last time you saw one of those in use? A few times he even wore an AMICE!

He chants some of the prayers on Sundays and almost always uses the Confiteor. He’s also really good in Confession.

Can we just make him Archbishop now? Or at least put him in charge of liturgy for the whole Archdiocese??? Please??

Why wait, go for Cardinal!!

Are you sure that you aren’t in my parish? We also have a young pastor with beautiful vestments (with chalice veil!) that he brought from Rome. We have the bells back, using fewer female altar servers (he inherited them), haven’t seen the amice. But he does wear a cassock! Now I’d like to get rid of the Mass of Creation and the Dan Schutte stuff, then I’d be perfectly happy!

Peace,
Linda

PS Hey, if two of us have young and orthodox priests, things are looking up!😃

I’ll admit my ignorance, what is an amice?

prv while were admitting ignorance

By chalice veil do you mean the decorative cloth that covers the chalice, paten an prificator and sometimes matches the vestments of the priest when the alterboy brings it to the alter?

It is a rectangular thing, maybe a few feet long that goes around the shoulders up by the neck and is put on under the white alb. It is not super thin, like a common winter scarf. It is a fatter looking rectangle than that.

Correct me if I’ve got that wrong!

As long as we are having fun, what does OP mean by the Sanctuary? Do you have altar rails so you mean everything inside them, or what, exactly? I’ve found that different configurations lead to slight differences.

OK, I’ll define all my terms! 😃

Chalice veil: the square cloth that matches the vestments that is placed over the chalice, paten and pall

Pall: The cloth-covered square of cardboard that is placed over the chalice to keep out flies and whatever else may contaminate the wine/Precious Blood

Amice: A rectangular white cloth with strings attached that is put around the priest’s neck and covers his Roman collar. It is optional if the priest wears an alb that comes up high enough to cover the collar.

Sanctuary: Yes, we have altar rails, and by Sanctuary I mean the area inside the rail with the altar, the lectern, the Tabernacle, the chair, etc. If we did not have altar rails, I would use this term to mean the area around the altar where all the action of the Mass occurs.

Linda S - I’m so glad to hear things are going well where you are also. I think things are indeed looking up. A good percentage of our newly ordained priests are good and solid like this.

It was originally intended to protect the collars of the expensive vestments from dirty necks. It fell into disuse because of Albs with incorporated collars. Older Albs didn’t have the wrap around collars.

The only priest I have ever seen/heard wearing an amice is “Father Mike”. Father Mike is a paper doll I made to teach my kids about the vestments. Father Mike is old school.😃

Personal feelings aside, Rome has approved the use of female altar servers. If he is doing anything to restrict, limit or discourage female altar servers, then that is not a good thing.

Rome approved them but didn’t require them. The Bishop of the diocese has the ability to determine who may and who amy not serve in these Lay ministry positions. Yes it is possible that a Bishop could also say Women cannot be Readers or EMHC in his diocese.

Yes, the Bishop sets the protocol for his diocese but if the Bishop is not against it, is a pastor allowed to interject his own personal feelings and restrict or discourage such things? I would think not because that then takes final authority away from the Bishop and gives it to the pastor.

The final decision rests with the priestly celebrant of the Mass. Obviously behind-the-scenes politics could play a part, however.

Yes, the pastor is allowed to make his own decision regarding females serving at the altar. But that is another thread.

I think it’s great to see the GIRM implemented, and it must be especially encouraging to see a specific abuse corrected.

General Instruction of the Roman Missal, Chapter !V, para 162: These ministers should not approach the altar before the priest has received Communion, and they are always to receive from the hands of the priest celebrant the vessel containing either species of the Most Holy Eucharist for distribution to the faithful.

Although I understand the tone of this complimnet toward your priest, I would recommend you NOT push for him to move into the ranks of Bishops. We have so few priests like this one in the priestly ranks. Best to keep him right were he is and can do the most good.

A Bishop can assign that authority to pastors if he chooses.
