In this diocese every person in lay ministry including this one is supposed to first take a 12-week course in Basic Faith Formation, based on the Compendium to the CCC. After that, there is a specific course 6-12 weeks depending on topic for EMHCs and other liturgical ministry, ministry to the sick and homebound, and so forth, there are 10 or 12 topics for additional training. Cathechists have their own diocesan formation
program.
In practice, fewer than half the parishes obey this directive, most have what are called “Mass coordinators” for each Mass, who are in charge of scheduling lay ministers, and sometimes sacristan duties, and they recruit and train their own people, with very mixed results.
The specific training for EMHCs, beginning of course with sound catechesis on the Mass and Eucharist, the GIRM and other relevant documents, and the nature of the priesthood, should cover the specifics of how and why to properly perform the actual function, how to assist communicants in receiving, the reasons for the directives, what they as laity are and are not allowed to do, how to respond to accidents etc. That should be a hands-on training or practicum. Purification of vessels and how they are to be prepared and handled should of course be part of this.
