Hi,

My wife asked me an interesting question today that I didn’t know how to answer.

The book of Isaias says (The Old Testament Prophesy of Jesus):
“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign. Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel”

And Matthew says (The New Testament Account):
Behold a virgin shall be with child, and bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

So the question is why the name Jesus and not Emmanuel?

Thanks for you help!

Who exactly is the ‘they’ Isaiah is talking about who are to call Him Emmanuel? We absolutely DO call Him Emmanuel, as did Mary and Joseph who knew who He was. So did His followers who believed He was indeed God. This doesn’t mean that was meant to be His proper name.

‘Call His name’ simply means ‘call Him’, doesn’t mean Emmanuel becomes His official name. It’s just like another passage of Isaiah - ‘and His name will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace’. These clearly are meant to be titles and not His proper name.

That makes sense. For some reason both my wife and I thought the name Emmanual was suppose to be a proper name. Thanks for the help.

Hi 7777777Now,

just further to LilyM’s post :

Emmanuel means ‘God is with us’ in the old Jewish language and was a title as LilyM has said.

People have since made this title a (first) Judaic / Christian proper name.

This creates some confusion with everyone when we first read the text. You are not alone. 🙂
