Emmaus Road Publishing sale

Hopefully this won’t be considered spam as I do not work for them.

Scott Hahn’s St. Paul Center recently acquired Emmaus Road Publishing and have been celebrating with a pretty big sale (50% of some titles like Ralph Martin’s excellent “The Fulfillment of All Desire”). It is a “while supplies last” sort of thing.

I wouldn’t normally post something like this, but it’s such a good sale on so many great Catholic books, I figured that people around here would likely be interested in such a thing. If not, then carry on!

It was founded and operated by “Catholics United for the Faith”. That organization had done wonderful work since 1968. Today there are many apostolates affirming Catholic doctrine, but for many years CUF stood almost alone, responding in a positive way to attacks, confusion, and misinformation, both from Catholic and external sources. They always stood in solidarity with the bishops, unlike many other groups. They formerly had many active local chapters.

In recent years they apparently lost some members to other groups who were aggressively attacking the bishops. They lost others, I think, who no longer felt the organization had a well defined apostolate, either at the local or national level. Still others just got discouraged. The older members died, or became inactive, and it was probably hard to find recruits since so many young Catholics didn’t know what they were missing in their local schools and diocese, since they never learned it themselves.

I don’t know the current status of CUF. I wish them well if they can find a role, as they are still needed. A lot of people influenced by CUF in the 1970s and 1980s went on to do important things.

‘The Catholic Bible Concordance’ is very good. It is a concise concordance for the RSV-CE and the changes in the RSV-2CE. But it looks like it is out of stock, so I don’t know if the 50% discount would apply (probably not)?

Commenter is correct about CUF. CUF is based out of Steubenville just as the St. Paul Center. Dr. Hahn mentions that he “co-founded” Emmaus Road Publishing in the email that I received. I know that at one point he was on CUF’s Board of Directors. It’s all so interconnected.

I’m not sure what the status of CUF is at the moment. Their website is still up, but it still lists their former President.

Everything you obtain from St. Paul and CUF is going to be reliable, from a Catholic view. My only complaint is that CUF also used to foster action by their members and chapters to improve things at the parish, diocese, Catholic school, college, etc. In the 1990s they stopped informing or encouraging that kind of advocacy by their members. I wish they or someone else would pick up that ministry.

But their written materials were always good, you may find a bargain.

Good point. I wasn’t familiar with them back then, but I have heard stories (some of them from the folks who viewed “CUFers” as the thorn in their ideological side). I haven’t heard as much about that side of their ministry in a while. I do still point people to their Effective Lay Witness Protocol, though.
