I have been wanting to post about this for days. And for the past few nights I have been staring at my computer screen responding to other post trying to get up the nerve to write this. I must admit, I am a bit scared because in previous post where I have come here for help, some people where supportive others just uncharitable. But nonetheless, I will write with the realization some people will use this as an excuse to be mean.

I have been praying to God for emotional healing. I did not grow up on the Brady Bunch. It is like the elephant in the room, I did not realize things were unhealthy as a kid. But as a teenager, there was a traumatic event and during the aftermath, it became very obvious what went on in my home was not good.

My dad did not know how to handle the trauma and he just went to suffocating me emotionally. I did not appreciate it and I carried a lot of anger. I remember it was the era when Michael Jackson released his album Thriller. All the teenagers were trying to do the moon walk. I was in the house trying to do the moon walk and I couldn’t even innocently do that without my dad stepping in and showing me everything I was doing wrong.

I had a lot of resentment and anger towards him. As a teenager, it was my only defense. I went to school and sat in class and did my work. I did not talk to many people because I was way to shy. I felt like the class nerd.

My dad was so controlling he would go so far and to tell me all my opinions were wrong. He even didn’t like the way I applied nail polish. He insisted that you did not put it on the whole nail but only the tip which I have NEVER seen anyone do. Not even in this day where the fad is to put a different color on each nail. He told me that either I wore mail polish his way or I did not wear it at all. When I told the few friends I had about it, they all laughed saying it would look stupid and made fun of me. And made remarks that ended up making me feel like I was a looser because my dad was so unreasonable.

So, this pain slowly went away when I left home. But over the years it comes back to haunt me. I see how I chose to associate with people who were just as unreasonable, controlling and shaming as my father. ie repeating the pattern.

Well, lately, the pain has come back. Every time I say to myself ‘This time I will deal with it in a healthy way so it does not come back’. But I keep concluding that I obviously didn’t do it right last time since the pain comes back.

I do not like reliving these events. They are horrid. The way resentments pop into my head out of the blue is annoying at best. When in public it is humiliating because people see my thoughts are elsewhere and ask if I am OK.

I try my best to pray and tell God I want to forgive and I ask Him to show me the way. But I wonder how much that does and if there is not another step I am missing.

The worse part is, outside of work, this my all consuming activities. IE praying to God, reading about the Saints and reading the bible. Doing as much as I can so that God will shine His light on this. And I am starting to feel alone. I have no one to talk to about these things except for one trusted nun who is amazing. But she is going to be away for three weeks and I don’t know how I will cope

A few days ago, I called a friend I had not seen in a while. When I asked if she had time to chat, she told me she wanted to go for a walk before it got dark. I invited myself along. It was a nice walk and I enjoyed it. However, when she asked what I had been up to since we last spoke, I had nothing to add. I did not feel comfortable saying ‘well, I am working on forgiving my dad for all the cruel things he did.’ Mainly because this woman doesn’t know about my past. And frankly, I don’t think she could be much help. I enjoy her company for other reasons and accept she can not be my everything. But when all I do is pray to God and she used to be a Catholic and now calls herself an atheist because she is forever wondering ‘who is this God’, there is no point thinking she could/want to understand.

So, here it leaves me a bit clueless. How do I know this is bringing healing?

So that was my rant

Hi Angie.

It’s good you are willing to forgive, I know it’s hard because I too experience psychological abuse from a parent (this is what it sounds like).
Keep praying. Jesus will help you forgive if you ask and pray for your father too.

You mentioned others are noticing your thoughts are elsewhere- if this issue is impacting on your life I think it’s time you speak to someone about this if you haven’t already done so.
Maybe speak to someone you trust but better yet, you may need to talk your feelings over with a counsellor.

I’m praying for you.

**I’m sorry you had a difficult and abusive childhood. No child deserves that.

I hope what I’m going to say will help you begin to let all your hurt, anger, and the helplessness you felt, go. Please know that when your father abused you and made you feel so worthless, that it became something not between you and your father anymore. When one commits great harm against another, it now becomes something between that person and God, you come out of the picture. You were small and helpless, but God isn’t. You can open your closed fist, and slowly, slowly start to let it all go. Your father will have to deal with everything he did to you with God, and God will take care of it.

Abuse was all you knew, and you learned what it took to survive. Now that you are an adult, of course one looks for what one is familiar with. This is why it is so easy for an abused child to look for a man or woman who is like their abuser because that is what is familiar, and they know how to survive it. You lived in hell as a child, do you also want to live in hell as an adult ? Don’t you deserve to be talked to ever so kindly? To see tenderness and love in another’s eyes for you ?

Sure it will all be new and strange and different for you, but don’t be afraid of learning how people are when they care and love one another. You don’t want to bring baggage with you to weigh down a good relationship. Your father took charge of your childhood, and he wrecked it. It is time for YOU to now take charge of things, and live your OWN life, don’t let your father still run your life by his memories. You have to let it all go. Every time you think of your father, or something he did, keep saying a Hail Mary till the thought goes away. I think it may surprise you how often your mind and memories are you looking back on your life, when girl, YOU NEED TO BE LOOKING FOREWARD !

All the best.** :hug1:

**Blessed Mother, please intercede for us.
Hold the sorrowful, strengthen the fearful,
mother and love the weary, abused, neglected
or forgotten among us,
give your aid to all needing help or healing,
assist those who are sick, in pain or suffering,
be with those needing peace,
console the lonely or brokenhearted,
comfort the lost or hopeless,
guard the unborn,
pray for those who are dying or who have died,
soften those with hardened hearts,
enlighten those who do not yet see truth,
help us be brave enough to let our hurt and anger go,
show us the way to do the right thing,
protect those who are in danger,
and guide us from every evil.
May all who keep your sacred commemoration
experience the might of your assistance.
Amen **

Hi Angie,

I’m sorry to hear about your pain. I think that I understand pretty well what you described. In my case, it wasn’t a family member who treated me with cruelty, but even so, I can relate to everything you said. When your mind begins wandering and drifting into flashbacks and remembrances of the incidents, or just reflecting and thinking about them in general, I think that that’s proof-positive that you have a lot going on just beneath the threshold of consciousness. I’m sure you see what I mean; that there is anger and sadness simmering in you and which rises to the surface even when you don’t want it to. In my experience, this can make it very difficult to do simple things like reading a book or watching a film. You suddenly find your that concentration is gone and you’re rehashing the same old trauma. It distracts from everything. That’s how it was with me, and I know how maddening and frustrating it is. There are ways you can learn to let go of all of it, though, to just release it so that you don’t endlessly relive it. One of those ways is what Blue Rose suggested. Talking to a counselor can be a huge relief; I used to always feel really good afterwards. Would you mind if I private messaged you about what I used to get past all that I was going through? Either way, I’ll be praying for you, and I wish you well.🙂

Angie,

You are a beautiful child of God.

May the Lord comfort you and heal you. Perhaps sharing your pain with a friend or two would help in that regard.

Yes I would love you to PM me.

As for the counselor. I did see some when I was younger. And sadly a lot did more harm than good. Once I met an abusive man, my counselor told me it was my intimacy issues that were getting in the way and encouraged me to stay with him to learn to deal with my issues. Needless to say, this man played a number on me by being abusive.

I had a Christian counselor (not catholic) and all she wanted to talk about why my limiting views of not wanting to date a divorced man because after all, I was not getting any younger

12 years ago my anger was out of control. I really wanted help to learn to let it go. I went to a spiritual director. I told her I needed to quit being so angry. All she did was tell me ‘You are angry with God and it is time you get it out.’ She kept pushing my buttons trying to make me mad thinking it would do me good when I was too angry and needed to let it go.

So, I do not trust counselors. My friend the nun may not be an official counselor by her academic past. However, she is the most help anyone could give me and she acts like my counselor. And I believe God put her in my life for a reason.

I want God to be my ultimate counselor and I am seeking Him out and trying to accept and recognize the people He puts in my life. Not to mention, a lot of counselors are convinced the only thing abusive in my childhood is that I was brought up Catholic:rolleyes: When I know it was my saving grace

I have been trying to discipline myself into doing that. And I must admit, I fall short more than I care to admit.

However, I have trouble believing it is that simple. After all, I have been trying a similar approach for a while and it doesn’t feel like it is getting any better
