What does it mean to “emotionally separate” from your parents? I’ve heard that term many times in reference to adult children’s relationship with their parents. Can someone explain it to me please?

As far as I can tell…it’s getting to the point in your life where your decisions, and your desire to please God, are primary. It’s putting it to where your parents’ values and desires take on lesser importance. It’s an overall description of the shift from a child who obeys their parents to an adult who honors them but does not necessarily obey.

Sometimes people’s parents have way too much influence in their life and relationships. In order to live their adult life they “emotionally separate” from the control one or both parents have exerted on them. This only means that they chose to let their life be determined by their beliefs and their significant relationships not that they cut their parents out of their life or disrespect them.

Though it doesn’t always mean you have to keep them in your life, or keep them in very often, either.
