Is it a sin to get mad, or upset (sad) but not act out? Like if one were to get mad and kind of just be in a bad mood and not be very friendly. Would that be a sin???

To simply “be” mad or upset is not a sin. The actions you take can be sinful however. There is such a thing as righteous anger; remember Jesus throwing out the crooked merchants in the temple? Despite how we feel (happy, sad, angry, etc) we are still to act as Christ wants us to act.

I agree. Feeling them is one thing, acting on them is another. But be careful about what you think as well. I’ve found that, in myself, if I’m upset I wish bad things would happen to the person I’m mad at. Or hurt by. I also believe in having a place to vent. Some way to talk it out in a “safe” place. With that, and getting good feedback is SOOOO helpful. If I can’t talk it out, then it’s only stiffled. If let it lay like that, it will only explode in your face years later.

thank you! yes, when i get angry or upset, i sometimes say mean things. but, i just thought that maybe just the emotion itself is a sin. like by allowing someone to make me angry is a sin. but i guess it’s not. thankss

Anger would only be a sin if you either think of or act to harm or cause evil to come on someone or even on yourself, examples would be indulging in violent and murderous thoughts, wishing dangerous accidents to come on someone, insults, hitting someone, murder, vengeance, blasphemy, sacrilege, suicide, self-mutilation and self-flagellation, etc. There have been incidents where people gravely injure themselves just to spite someone else, an example would be in the book of Maccabees when a Jew killed himself while hurling his bodily organs at his enemy, or recently I heard some guy intentionally jumped off a building while angrily arguing with his wife. Now, simply being a little bit rude to someone out of frustration of certain burdens imposed on you without desiring or inflicting harm on them is not a grave sin. It would perhaps be venial sin if it lacks the virtue of patience, humility, and charity, example would be when obeying authority one decides to obey in a rude manner, or when someone asks for a favor which you rudely denied but later did in good faith or in the process of doing it one does it with an attitude displaying one’s displeasure with it. Perhaps also rudeness might be justified when condemning an immoral action as Jesus when overturning the money changers in the Temple. As for sadness, sadness would only be a sin if you dwell on it too much as indulging in it, or have thoughts or a desire to harm oneself or someone else, this would be considered “despair” which can lead to suicide, self-mutilation, mercy killing (euthanasia, assisted suicide), gluttony, lust, blasphemy, etc. However, the Church takes into account that sometimes one might not be in a state of mind to have full knowledge and deliberate consent.
