At my church, at daily mass, we have an offertory where the gifts are brought up from the back of the church. Since the mass is somewhat well attended, we use two patens and two chalices for the distribution of Holy Communion to keep the mass moving along since people need to get to work. However, all of the hosts are consecrated in the principal paten. Then during the Lamb of God, after the breaking of the bread, half of the hosts are transferred to the second paten used in the distribution of Holy Communion. My concern is that sometimes, this second paten is brought to the altar at the offertory and remains on the altar, empty during the consecration. Is this allowed? or should it be brought up at the Lamb of God? Does it really matter? Are empty vessels allowed on the altar during consecration?
