Salvation only comes through the Church. The only was people are saved ‘outside’ is because they are unknowingly latching on to the inherent truths of Catholicism in Protestantism, and, therefore, are implicit members of the Catholic Church. 🙂

“It developed” is just another way of saying, it changed.
No. It’s not.

A development of doctrine is quite different from a change of doctrine. Take the real presence, for example; the Catholic Church has not always held explicitly to transubstantiation. The early church held to an objective presence and believed the Eucharist to be the true Body and Blood of Christ, but it did not make the explicit distinction between “substance” and “accidents”. This is a later development of doctrine, but it doesn’t alter the doctrine in any way; it simply defines it in clearer terms.

Woud you accuse the church of “changing doctrines” when it dogmatically defined transubstantiation?
Anyway, best course for Catholics to take is, unless proven otherwise, everyone is saved. Get out of the “us and them unsaved people,” mentality.
Oh yeah… that would just do wonders for the whole “evangelization” thing. Aging hippies are free to sit on their arses, but the rest of us will keep spreading the word as Christ commanded.

The fact is, the Church taught that there was no salvation, outside.

Today, the Church teaches that there is salvation even through other religions.

Thats a change, no matter how you try to dress it up.

This thread has strayed from the original topic. Please take the EENS topic to another thread or I will have to close this thread. Thank you all.

Any Catholic who lived before Vatican II can tell you what they were taught about Protestants. Jim
Actually, what I remember was not anti-protestant so much as it was pro-Catholic. When I did go to my Protestant grandmother’s memorial service, I left it with a deep and profound gratitude that I had the Mass and the Holy Eucharist.

Maybe it was because here in south Louisiana we (Catholics) are the majority. Our priests spent more time on the “Legion of Decency” then haranguing the Protestants.

Of course, we could always go back to “buying a pagan baby” during Lent.

So as not to get in trouble what is EENS?
EENS is the abbreviation for the Latin phrase (the exact spelling eludes me) regarding the Church’s teaching about salvation outside the Church.

Well now i really feel dumb:blush: I thought maybe it was no salvation for one who was a youth in the 60s…

Bold is my emphasis.

Prior to Vatican II, this would have been heretical for a Catholic to believe.

Jim
Feeneyism was condemned in 1949 and Fr. Feeney was excommunicated in 1953 by Pope Pius XII for teaching that there are no exceptions to salvation outside of the church.

You are making an claim that believing such was heretical. The above link contradicts your assertion. Can you provide some documentation in support of your claim? Uh, that would be documentation with magisterial authority, not the writing of some theologian.

Now that that has been defined, please return to the original topic, folks. Thank you. 🙂
