What is the end of the world that Jesus spoke about in the bible. Do we believe in it?
What are the “end times” that Jesus spoke about, does that have anything to do with us today?
thanks you.
(please not to complicated, i am not very educated and i cannot follow complicated explanations)
thank you.
When Jesus spoke about “the end of the world” He did not mean the physical end or complete destruction of the earth. The original Greek translated “world” is
aeon, meaning “an age.”
Jesus was talking about the end of the age of man – that time period from Adam to His second coming, when man is left to do what he pleases under the influence of Satan. The end of that age will bring in a new age where Satan will be removed and where God will force the peoples of this earth to obey Him and keep His commandments.
Notice Jesus’ parable of the tares in Matthew 13. He explained the parable this way: “The field is the world [Greek *kosmos, meaning the physical world] (v.38).” But then He said, “… the harvest is the end of the world” (v. 39). Now, the original Greek translated “world” here is
aeon, not
kosmos, as in the previous verse. Clearly Jesus was not referring to the physical end of the earth but to the end of a certain time period in human history.
You can check the other verses with the phrase “end of the world” and you will find that the original Greek used is
aeon. There’s one in Matthew 24:3 where the disciples asked Jesus, “…what shall be the sign of thy coming and the end of the world [Greek, *aeon]?” Another is in Matthew 28:20 when Jesus commissioned His disciples to teach all nations, “… Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world [Greek, *aeon].”
But when what was meant is the physical world, the Greek used is
kosmos. Here are some examples:
Matthew 24:14 – “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world [Greek, *kosmos]….”
Matthew 24:21 – “For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world [Greek, *kosmos]….”
Luke 4:5 – “And the devil, taking him up into a high mountain, showed unto him all the kingdoms of the world [Greek, *kosmos]….”
When Jesus spoke of a “world to come” where there will be eternal life (Mark 10:30), that coming “world” will not be a new
kosmos, but a new
aeon – a new age in man’s history – as shown in the original Greek that is rendered “world” in English.
