I have been in a relationship with my best friend for the past three years. However, about two months ago, he came to me and said that he did not like me anymore, romantically. When he said that to me, I did not understand it because everything between us as I saw it was good. It was very sudden, so I asked him to give us a chance to work things out. I thought that maybe we were not seeing each other as much as usual or being as honest with each other as we could be. We decided that we would work together in order to figure out where things had gone astray.

For the next two weeks, we spent more time together. At the end of those two weeks I asked him if things had gotten better, and he replied with “A little.” I had faith that things would indeed get better, so I believed him when he said that to me. I also asked him one night if his heart was in it, he responded with “yes”. He told me that he still loved me and cared about me, but the “chemistry” was not there anymore. (At the beginning of our relationship, we were moving too fast physically. So, I asked him to slow down because I was not ready for that. I think this may have affected our situation.) I was a little insecure at this time, but he promised me that even though he had a chance to be with any other girl, he wanted to try saving the relationship he had with me. I was hopeful again.

The third week, we had winter break at the university and came back to visit our parents for the holidays. At this point, we were spending more time together and being more open about our relationship. I believed that things were getting better, but as soon as we got back to our hometown we stopped seeing each other regularly. We have been home for over a month now and we have only seen each other about four times (once a week). He tells me that he does not see anything getting better, but we will at least try until my birthday (January 15) just in case there is somethinig we can still do. Since the day that he promised me we would try until my birthday, we have only seen each other once. That time we saw each other it was to tell me that he did not want to try anymore. He said that he had decided that it was too hard for him. He could not do it anymore. I told him how much it hurt that he was breaking a promise to me because he had never done it before. I told him that God wants us to have patience and persevere. After a few hours of me talking to him about how I had a strong feeling that we must not give up yet, he decided that we could keep trying.

Now, this is not me asking for advice on my relationship. I am asking for all of your prayers as I go through this. I have read in The Road Less Traveled by M. Scott Peck, M.D. that the feeling of love can eventually die down. However, he also says that this is when a couple moves from love to genuine love because they begin to see the bigger picture of the relationship. I believe that God has brought this sudden mishap into our relationship because He wants to test our patience and perseverance.

Has anyone else been through this sort of test in a relationship?

Today I asked my mom how long marriages are possible. She told me that love is a cycle in which God brings us new opportunities to move forward. I want to believe that I will be with Luke forever because I have faith that we will be okay again. However, I am scared that if we do not stay together, I will lose my faith. I have been praying almost nonstop every day since the day Luke told me he did not like me anymore. I am so hopeful that my prayers will work.

Please, if anyone has any advice at all, help me.

Thank you.

The so-called “feeling of love” or “being in love” often translates as “attraction” and so often it does fade. That’s when you find out if you actually love someone or if someone actually loves you…that is, you or they are prepared to give each other their best efforts to be blessing and support to each other, and to be faithful in easy and difficult times.

There are couples, it seems, where attraction always remains along with genuine love, but there are many who lose that initial attraction, but choose to grow in love, genuine gospel love, for each other. Your boyfriend does’t seem prepared to do that. He perhaps doesn’t understand, and doesn’t realise that in a new relationship, an initial attraction my also eventually fade and he once again has to face whether or not he can live in mutual gospel love with the next person if not you.

Sometimes neither and sometimes only one person in a couple is willing to move on to genuine love that faithfully faces all things together, and it is very sad.

It is very sad to face troubles in any special relationship, or to be facing the end of the wonderful dream that one has given one’s heart to, the dream of a good and happy future together

I will keep you, and you both, in my prayers and daily Masses. God bless you.:grouphug: Trishie

Thank you for your advice and prayers, Trishie.

I have been preparing myself spiritually and emotionally to speak with my boyfriend about this being a transition in our relationship. He knows how important it is to me to not give up, so I am praying that he can realize that this is another opportunity for our relationship to grow.

Like I said, I have been praying about this for a very long time and I keep getting the same thing over and over again: Be patient.
That is what I am doing for now.

Thank you again 🙂

You expressed it so well in calling this “a transition in our relationship” That’s in in a nutshell! In the end, you expressed the issue better and more succinctly than I did!
I hope and pray you can get through to him about this, since you see the problem clearly.

There is so much in our culture that is against the wisdom in recognizing the transitional phase of a relationship after the honeymoon phase and before it progresses to deep genuine love. Modern media…movies, books, magazines, poetry and song all tend to promote the primacy of “falling in love” over the kind of genuine love that you are hoping and praying for.

As I’ve noted before, Jesus never speaks of '“falling in love” only of genuine love for others that is a real as love for self, only a gospel love that truly desires and acts towards the other’s true good.

My praying never stops, and answers keep coming to me.

I am a very stubborn person, but I find that a blessing because I never give up. This whole time I have been against him saying that he does not have the same feelings for me. I am constantly saying “People do not just stop loving each other.” But now I am realizing that it can happen, and everything happening right now is a blessing. This is simply a test of our love.

Thank you again Trishie! 🙂
I appreciate your kind words.
I have not told any one other than God about this problem we are having, and it feels good to just let it all out here to people who I hope can understand me.

Roxylu,

I’m more pessimistic about this than Trishie.

Has it occurred to you that, when your prayers about this are answered with “be patient,” the Lord may be telling you to wait for His answer, rather than being patient with your boyfriend - and forcing him to be patient, too?

What I sense from your posts is that **you **believe the two of you have an undying love, but **he **doesn’t. He tries to end it, you talk about God and talk him into trying some more. This has happened at least 4 times. I don’t hear much about you understanding what is bothering him, and that sends up a red flag to me. It makes it sound as if you are trying to force him to fit into your mold - a very bad basis for love.

Here’s my advice. Let him go. If he really does love you, he will find out that no other girl measures up to you, and will come back to you. That may take a while.

If you don’t let him go, you are risking losing him altogether. He will eventually explode, and end all contact with you. Even if he does find out that you were the best, he won’t come back.

So turn him over to God’s care, and let him go. Pray for him, not about him.

I’ll pray for you,

Ruthie

I agree with Ruthie, too. :o It is hard to break up…it really is. But, I don’t think I would want to be with a guy who tells me that ‘he can be with any other girl, but he chooses me.’ Aw, thanks. lol I think that you can do better, frankly, roxanna. Again, I have been there…and it hurts.😦 But, I think that if someone truly wants to be with you, he will make you feel that way by his actions. It won’t take coaxing, and asking, and so forth to keep things going. Just my two cents.

I’m sorry this is happening to you.

roxylu,

I am going to have to agree with the previous two posters.

I was in a similar situation, except that I was playing the part of Luke–somewhat–and my boyfriend was playing your part. I had doubts and wanted perfection in a boyfriend, although I loved him. My boyfriend loved me for who I was, didn’t exactly understand how I felt, but knew that I needed space. For a long time, I struggled with my thoughts. All the while, my boyfriend never tried to persuade me that he was the right guy for me. He always was kind to me and gave me a smile and a hug… but let me figure out things on my own. And, that is what Luke needs to do, too.

I know it may be hard not to get involved in this when he expresses doubt; you want things to be perfect. But, this test is more a test of his love to you: does he love you enough to stick it out and make it work, or does he not want to do that? In the end, you don’t want to pressure someone to stay with you. You deserve a man who loves you fully.

My boyfriend and I made it through the troubles. We love each other. And, I am (slowly) getting over my doubts about him: that he is not “perfect”! All of these troubles have brought us closer together and, I think, into a more mature step in the relationship. Too bad, after all of this, that he’s Jewish. 😛

Give Luke time. He will give you his answer.

I know this must be hard for the OP. But I do want to express my reservations that the bf might be unprepared to transition from romantic love to the next level.

It might be that he is prepared, but this is not the relationship that is right for him.

That is the whole point of dating/seeing people before marriage, to find out if they should marry. Some people take longer than others to find out that it is meant to be, or not meant to be.

I don’t think that it automatically means the bf is wrong if he decides to walk away from this relationship.

I’m so sorry OP, I don’t mean to hurt you or seem like I’m harsh ol’ meanie.
You don’t want to try to keep someone that wants something else, if you aren’t married yet.

Though it has ended with him, I feel sort of relieved about the situation.

I know that I need to put my life in God’s hands. God will never leave me, so I need to trust him more than anything.

Thank you everyone for your advice and prayers.

God Bless,
Roxanna

Roxylu–

I’m so sorry about your situation. I know it hurts. the loneliness, rejection… I was dumped after a 4 yr relationship in a similar ugly drawn out painful way too. I thought I’d never find mr right, I’d never feel love again, I’d end up that wierd old lady living alone with fifteen cats…

but when I met my husband, he got through my walls. the love I had for my boyfirend wasn’t even love in comparison. I would die for my husband. I never felt that way for my ex. and it took time to get over him. and how he hurt me, and trust someone again. but time will heal your pain. and Mr right will come around and you won’t have to beg him to stay with you. HE WILL WANT TO. It’s a wonderful feeling.

“the Lord works in mystereous ways…” too true. he has a plan for you, he will lead you and your future husband together. I think that the pain you feel now will make you stronger. it’s an ugly road but it’s worth the trip. besides, you’re young. lots of people are married and have a couple kids before a spouse jumps ship like that… it’s not much consolation but I’m just trying so say put your head down and plow ahead, you’ll get through this, and you’ll find the one you’re meant to be with.
