I may be naive, but I think I can see drastic, positive changes in the world. For example, I understand that Bill Gates donated half his wealth to fight extreme poverty. His team, which includes the World Bank, claim that not only will extreme poverty be extinct by 2030, but other forms of poverty will be helped as well.

I used to see capitalism as an evil that was at the root of poverty, but now I’m beginning to see where it will evolve into something good to help alleviate all the needless suffering in the world by evolving into a more special type of “socialism.”

For those of us who truly value brotherly LOVE, good days are ahead of us. I predict that materialism is going to decrease, and true spiritualism will increase.

Major caveat: I am no expert. Just one man’s perceptions here.

We can presume mankind has existed much longer than the common 6,000 years that has some recorded history. Egypt had some 13 dynasties before Christ, for example. Of course, the skillful and bold became the elite of their day and place. I presume most other humans lived a hard life subject to wars and subjugation.

Flash forward to some 500 years ago when we see a dramatic increase in knowledge and tools controlled by the elite of their day and place. The New World was discovered. Still, most humans lived in dire poverty.

Come now to the the Industrial Revolution that began nearly 200 years ago and we see many more people gaining a better life, at least in Europe and America. Still, many lived a harsh life in poverty that COULD be reduced if the elite choose to better share their resources.

Now, it is important to actually read thoughtfully Pope Leo XIII’s great encyclical, Rerum Noverum - commonly called On Capital and Labor. Pope Leo set down the proper Moral Law based on Scripture. Since then our Popes have written 7 more ‘social justice’ encyclicals. Sadly, extremely few Catholic organizations try to teach the set of them. And most non-Catholics would avoid them if they even knew about them.

Today we have some 190 countries in the world. Most of them have enough resources to provide for their population, at least to pull them out of extreme poverty, through use of better basic agriculture, trade with other countries, better education for children, etc. It seems to me the major problem is the elite in those countries are too concerned with their own life style and power and have no real desire to cooperate and build their societies up. Yes, some are, thank God, but many refuse to set conditions were real progress can be made. War and subjugation continue in many places.

Experience teaches that Capitalism, properly regulated and not over-regulated, provides the best path to improved quality of live for the most people. When people are educated - trained - they are capable of doing skilled labor and can earn a better income and live better. Peace is a pre-requisite.

But, the countries that suffer the most, must have enough of their elite willing to spend the time and effort to bring it about. The West can offer, but we cannot and should not take over.

This short review is not THE answer but it should be considered in the discussion.

The countries that experience extreme poverty tend to be led by factions and warlords, not legitimate governments. These countries don’t practice regulated capitalism as we do in the west, and the citizens don’t have our rule of law to protect them.

Look at the way the world changed in just 200 years! Nobody back then could have conceived these changes… if you could have told them nearly all would have declared you a nut case. Yet here we are, right in the middle of a digital revolution. If Bill Gates and his team says that extreme poverty is going to come to an end in just 14 years, my ears are open and I think I can conceive that it’s going to really happen.

If capitalism evolves into some form of socialism, it is just socialism, and it won’t help. Free enterprise capitalism is what brings about prosperity. People have to be free to take risks, to invest, and be allowed to keep the fruits of the efforts.
There is truth to the old adage about teaching them " how to fish". It is education that will equip people to pursue wealth, that and government staying out of the way as much as possible.

I’m predicting that big businesses will eat up most of the small businesses and soon afterward control the world. The nature of capitalism is bound to change under such a scenario, similar to that of corporate socialism.

Just imagine what the world will look like in another 100-200 years. If the same level of growth/progress happens, our world will look nothing like it does today.

Didnt a past Pope say capitalism is OK as long as it was not extreme, but really that is the future, the companies want to make things as cheaply as possible, so labor is a huge concern, eventually the human worker bee will become obsolete (too expensive), once robotic technology catches up and we have bipedal robots who can work 24/7 for no pay, and can do more than any human…well the only ones who will benefit will be the company owners or super rich.

Progressing technology is a great thing, but at the rate we are going currently, (computer power doubling every 6 months or so), eventually that will reach a point when the scales tip against humans, but its not like anyone is going to slow down technology just so we can keep human jobs.

Nothing that man does will succeed in the end - all comes to failure - read Revelations - put your trust in God not man.

What about when God uses man to bring about good works? It is not a sign of distrust in God to try to cooperate with God in these good works. It is just a recognition that God often works through us and our efforts.

So when we see extreme poverty, the admonition to “trust in God and not man” is not a good excuse to refrain from doing what good work we can to alleviate the problem.

My answer was directed at people who think mans political systems will eventually lead to a utopia - it won’t we fail - unless you don’t believe in Revelation I never anywhere said we should not cooperate with God or deny he does good works through man

I strongly recommend to anyone and everyone who is interested in helping the poor to first see the documentary Poverty, Inc (dvd on Amazon).

The problems in many 3rd world countries are easy to solve:

–Protect property rights
–Protect the rule of law
–Gov’t and non-profits should not compete with independent business

I was very surprised to see how charities and countries are actually PROFITING off of keeping the poor, poor.

The documentary is disturbing. Please watch it.

"The poor you will always have with you…"
  • a really famous Guy
This is true, but how poor? I live in poverty, but I manage because I spend very sparingly.

Then read these:

“Whoever shuts their ears to the cry of the poor will also cry out and not be answered.”
~ Proverbs 21:13

Ezekiel 16:49
Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, surfeit of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy.

1 John 3:17-18
“If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”

“Life’s prime needs are water, bread, and clothing, a house, too, for decent privacy.”
-Sirach 29:21

Isaiah 58:7-10
Thus says the Lord:
Share your bread with the hungry,
and shelter the homeless poor,
clothe the man you see to be naked
and do not turn from your own kin.
Then will your light shine like the dawn
and your wound be quickly healed over.
Your integrity will go before you
and the glory of the Lord behind you.
Cry, and the Lord will answer;
call, and he will say, ‘I am here.’
If you do away with the yoke,
the clenched fist, the wicked word,
if you give your bread to the hungry,
and relief to the oppressed,
your light will rise in the darkness,
and your shadows become like noon.

Gal 5:13 (Douay Rheims)
13 For you, brethren, have been called unto liberty: only make not liberty an occasion to the flesh, but by charity of the spirit serve one another.

At the end of our life, we shall all be judged by charity. - St John of the Cross.

4A beggar’s request do not reject;
do not turn your face away from the poor.
-Sirach 2

27 He who gives to the poor will not want, but he who hides his eyes will get many a curse.
-Proverbs 28

34
I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.
35
This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
–John 13:

Luke 16:19-31
The Rich Man and Lazarus
19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’

25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’

29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’

30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Luke 3:11
John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”

The fact is, in the United States, small businesses still create most of the new jobs. Big businesses have not taken over the U.S., much less the world.

How is it that a big businessman was just elected president of America?

How does that equate to big businesses taking over the world?

That said, he got elected because of the failed policies of a socialist progressive president, and the flawed nature of his opponent.

Little by little, big business is controlling more and more of the world. Trump becoming president is a big step for big business. I can see big business taking over prisons and the armed forces in the next 20 years or so.

Evidence. It seems to me that if business, big and small, had greater freedom to create wealth worldwide, fewer people would live in poverty. It is a flawed idea that says we should redistribute existing wealth (by government force). It is a far better idea to increase the amount of wealth worldwide. Business does that. Not government.

Can you give me an example of a government that does not redistribute existing wealth by force?
