I am looking for answers from other Catholics who have had similar experiences. (Please don’t tell me to go see a psychiatrist/psychologist- that’s not helpful.)

In 2011, I went through a traumatic event in my life. I was training to answer calls from a student counseling helpine during my undergraduate career, but because of my many hangups at the time, I was not able to complete the training. It was too overwhelming to be scrutinized while practicing your counseling skills on mock callers. I ended up crying after being criticized for my lack of skills, and went home embarrassed and quite hopeless about my life and career. I wanted to help others but I wasn’t finding a venue to do that. I cried myself to sleep, asking God why he created me this way, and asking him to show me a way out and how I can help others. The next day I began to feel energy flowing in my palms, the left hand receives it, and it goes through my heart area, and flows out through the right hand. I also felt an opening at the top of my head, where energy was flowing in. I began to research this phenomenon, and understood them as chakras, and found many individuals online who’s aware of this subtle energy in their body. A lot of them go on to get certified as reiki practitioners, but I did not want to go that route because I knew that becoming open to subtle energy also opens you up to very negative energies depending on your actions, thoughts, and other unseen factors. I didn’t and still do not trust reiki, pranic healing, or other alternative healing methods outside of christian teachings.

For those of you with similar experiences, how did you develop this gift from God? Are you able to heal with your hands? Do you have a christian ministry of healing? How did you organize that?

Yes I have had many experiences like this. The first step is to get started with a Spiritual Director. If your pastor does not have enough time, ask for a referral.

Second, find the Catholic Charismatic Center or prayer group in your area that practices in conformity with the direction of the Vatican and the Bishops on the gifts of the Spirit.

Third, strongly focus on your own spiritual formation by taking classes in or thorugh your parish, attending daily Mass, and pray the Liturgy of the Hours.

If God has given you a gift for the service of the Church, all of these steps will help you to use it appropriately.

I silently pray for the people I see in my daily travels all the time … in business meetings, those I pass in the hallway etc. And many a time I have felt some sort of tingling or sensation in my palms while making these silent prayers … especially when I turn my palms toward them. What this is (or isn’t), though, I have no idea.

Dave 🙂
