Greetings all,

I was considering proposing to my girlfriend sometime next year and I want to start saving for an engagement ring. I have been looking around and I was considering a Claddagh engagement ring with a diamond. She is Irish and has a few things with the Claddagh symbol on them already. We were also considering possibly having Claddagh wedding bands.

She is Catholic as well as her family. I am currently not (raised Southern Baptist) but have been praying and seeking possible entrance into the Church from even the time before I met her. Still studying and trying to work certain things out.

My main question is, do you all feel that Claddagh engagement rings and Claddagh wedding bands are ok for a traditional Catholic wedding? Will the Priest bless them? I know they have celtic origins is the main reason I ask. The symbolism though in my opinion is totally fine, two hands representing friendship, holding a heart representing love, with a crown on the heart representing loyalty and devotion to each other.

What do you guys think? We want to have kind of an Irish themed wedding and reception, and maybe have pipes playing outside the church as guests come in. We may even be married by a Priest from Dublin! Thanks all and God bless.

There should be no problem with the ideas you propose in this post. Claddagh rings are very popular among those of Irish descent.

One thing - make sure she is okay with a diamond. Some people have moral objections to the traffic of diamonds.

I have a rather wide wedding ring that is the celtic knot. It has been nice because a wide ring with the openwork lets the air in, if you know what I mean. Look at some websites with celtic jewelry.

I think you should definitely go for it!!! I would have loved a claddagh engagement ring! DH ended up getting me a more traditional ring, but we did incorporate the claddagh into many aspects of our Catholic wedding, including the programs, favors, and cake. Our priest actually thought it was a really cool thing and had no problem with it at all. 👍

Great idea!!

Just make sure she didn’t receive one for her sweet sixteen. And ask her about diamonds. I just don’t like diamonds, myself. But I like blue topaz.my engagement ring is blue topaz with two small diamonds on each side.

a suggestion.

whatever ring you go with check your local pawn shops. there are good deals to be had. the $50 dollar engagement ring i got my wife was just appraised at $1500 when we took it to get it resized.

Take some times to look for wedding sets with claddagh design as well. The rings should be able to nestle well on her hand.

This would be wonderful, I think that she will love it, and it will be quite meaningful for you both (plus they don’t break the bank, they are quite affordable)–God bless, and good luck with your future marriage! 🙂

Love the Idea of a claddagh ring.

I echo the idea about finding out if she likes diamonds or would prefer something else. A lot of women are going for other stones these days. For instance some pick their birthstone, or the stone for the month you’re getting married etc.

If she does like diamonds, you could look into getting a canadian one rather than the african ones. And remember you can buy settings separate from the stones, which is a good way to get a very specific ‘look’ that is not mass marketed.

God bless you both:)
