Dear Forum,

I am looking for some authoritative, thorough, and scholastic English Apologetics Manuals - like something that would be used for a textbook in an english speaking Catholic seminary…or even for reference for a busy priest who has to combat heresy or convert infedels. Any one know of any such works in English?

I have one from TAN called, “Apologetics: A philosophical defense…,” but it is not really a methodical, scholastic, and thorough defense of the faith against the different religions.

Any one have any names of the titles of books? Any books on google, or the archive.org? Etc…?

Thanks,
Jordanqwef

No, these are not what I am looking for at all. (Edited) I am looking for a thorough and scholastic defense for the Catholic Religion countering pagan religions and heretics. I am looking for a large reference manual, not little pamphlets.(Edited)

The Handbook of Christian Apologetics by Dr. Peter Kreeft and Ronald Tacelli.

Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma by Dr. Ludwig Ott is used in seminaries, although it is more of an education tool than an apologetic.

Catholics and the New Age by Fr. Mitch Pacwa, S.J.

Catholic Apologetics by Fr. John Laux

Reasons to Believe by Dr. Scott Hahn.

Introduction to Christianity by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (now Benedict XVI)

God’s Word: Scripture, Tradition, Office by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger

The Dialectics of Secularization by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger

Principles of Catholic Theology by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger

Any book by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger

Orthodoxy by G.K. Chesterton

The Everlasting Man by G.K. Chesterton

Apologia by Cardinal John Henry Newman

Development of Christian Doctrine by Cardinal John Henry Newman

Catholicism and Fundamentalism by Karl Keating

You could also read the many apologetics throughout history like

Irenaeus’ Against Heresies
Augustine’s Confessions or City of God
Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologica
Peter Lombard’s Book of Sentences

etc…

Not exactly any of these. If you have ever seen a scholastic philosophy book, you will know what I am talking about. I am looking for a SCHOLASTIC apologetic work. Thorough, systematic. Someone else please?

Have you come across:

It’s old - from 1906 - but still useful.

Well it doesn’t get any more “scholastic” than the Summa 😉

The Bible.

The Catechism.

If these aren’t good starting points, I would wonder what it is you’re really looking for.

NO! CAN ANY OF YOU UNDERSTAND ENGLISH! I HAVE BEEN VERY CLEAR. THE BIBLE IS NOT AN APOLOGETICS MANUAL! THE SUMMA IS NOT AN APOLOGETICS MANUAL! THE CATECHISM IS NOT AN APOLOGETICS MANUAL! THIS IS NOT DIFFICULT! If you can not list an ENGLISH APOLOGETICS MANUAL, do not reply to this thread! I am looking for something in the style of DeGroot, which is a systematic apologetics manual, but it is in Latin. This is serioes. I have a taoist to convert, and I am looking for help from the Chuch. Ludwig Ott is not an apologetics manual. I wonder if any of you even know what apologetics is, your answers have been so highly absurd. Think reference! Reference apologetics manual!

I really just can’t believe the low quality answers I have recieved on this thread. Please, if you are not thoroughly familiar with the terms systematic, scholastic, the way that the Church understands these words, do not reply. I want someone who knows what they are talking about.

On a lighter note, I do doubt that there is even such a work available in the english language, but if there is, I want to know about it.

Kreeft’s book fits what you are describing as a “reference apologetics manual.” Perhaps since everyone has “misunderstood” what you are asking for, you need to communicate it better.

Um, I have a degree in theology and I’m not sure what exactly you’re looking for.

I will check my library. . .

OP, let me suggest that you have more charity in your replies to people who are doing their best to help you out.
