London, May. 23 (CWNews.com) - Prime Minister Tony Blair owes his historic third general election win to Catholic voters, according to a poll published this weekend.

The results of a MORI survey for the British weekly, The Tablet, shows that 53 percent of the Catholics who voted opted for the Labor Party.

Traditionally British Catholics are among Labor’s strongest supporters. But early in this year’s campaign, Catholic Labor MPs voiced concern that an intervention by Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor might cost them votes. The cardinal was caught up in controversy after he spoke out approving a pledge by the Conservative leader, Michael Howard, to make parliamentary time for a bill to reduce abortion time limits.

According to The Tablet, Labor’s loss of seats in the House of Commons was not strongly influenced by the abortion issue, but “appeared to be due, among other things, to Mr. Blair’s stand on Iraq.”
