What is the English translation of the following latin songs?
Tantum Ergo and O Salutaris Hostia.
Thank you very much and God bless you
Both of these famous verses are written by St. Thomas Aquinas. There is a 3rd one that is related and nearly as popular - Panis Angelicus.
Tantum Ergo is a popular hym often sung during Stations of the Cross and in certain other indulgenced and pious acts.
O salutaris Hostia, “O Saving Host”, is a section of one of the Eucharistic hymns written by St Thomas Aquinas for the Feast of Corpus Christi. He wrote it for the Hour of Lauds in the Divine Office. It is the last two stanzas of the hymn
Verbum supernum prodiens, and is used for the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
Tantum Ergo (Latin)
Tantum ergo Sacramentum
Veneremur cernui:
Et antiquum documentum
Novo cedat ritui:
Praestet fides supplementum
Sensuum defectui.
Genitori, Genitoque
Laus et jubilatio,
Salus, honor, virtus quoque
Sit et benedictio:
Procedenti ab utroque
Compar sit laudatio.
Amen.
Tantum Ergo (English)
*Down in adoration falling,
Lo! the sacred Host we hail,
Lo! o’er ancient forms departing
Newer rites of grace prevail;
Faith for all defects supplying,
Where the feeble senses fail.
To the everlasting Father,
And the Son Who reigns on high
With the Holy Ghost proceeding
Forth from Each eternally,
Be salvation, honor, blessing,
Might and endless majesty.
Amen. *
O Salutaris Hostia (Latin)
O salutaris Hostia,
Quae caeli pandis ostium:
Bella premunt hostilia,
Da robur, fer auxilium.
Uni trinoque Domino
Sit sempiterna gloria,
Qui vitam sine termino
Nobis donet in patria.
Amen.
O Salutaris Hostia (Literal Translation)
O salutary Host,
Who expandest the door of the sky,
Hostile wars press.
Give strength; bear aid.
To the Lord One in Three,
May there be sempiternal glory;
for life without end
he gives to us in our homeland.
Amen.
O Salutaris Hostia (Versation)
O saving Victim, open wide
The gate of Heaven to man below;
Our foes press on from every side;
Thine aid supply; Thy strength bestow.
All praise and thanks to thee extend,
For ever more, bless’d one in three.
O grant us life that shall not end,
In our true native land with thee.
Amen.
