Entering RCIA

Must someone formally leave another church (denomination) with a resignation letter or such before entering RCIA? The other church would be the mormon church. I have heard that that the Catholic Church does not recognize the mormon church so a resignation letter is not necessary. Thank you!
 
I dont think so but I think you would have to talk to a priest about that. Or maybe someone can adress that question better.
 
To my knowledge, nothing of that sort is required. The priest at your local Catholic parish can direct you better, and he would know what is needed from you. Generally, they may ask for any documents regarding baptism, marriage, and other similar documents, depending on the denomination you are coming from. As a mormon, I do not know the specifics of what you will need, but that’s the easy part of the process. 😉

It’s not required.

You may want to send some kind of resignation letter if you have a good relationship with the people in the church you are leaving and think they might be concerned if you suddenly stop showing up.

You may not want to send a letter if that will encourage them to do everything possible to keep you as part of their congregation and you don’t want to have to fend off their attempts.

Anyone is welcome in RCIA, including Catholics, although it is for thise who are considering joining the Church. If one Has been Catholic, but changed to another Church for a while, call the Parish for Advice. Several in RCIA are current Catholics who wish to know more of their Faith. I was gone 40 years, but knew the important essentials well enough to attend a very few classes.

the Catholic Church has no such rule, simply that once you decide definitely to become Catholic you no longer worship or participate in their activities. That does not mean you cannot go back to visit friends, go to that church on holidays with family for instance, but you cannot participate in their worship.

As a former Mormon, and now practicing Catholic I say WELCOME HOME!
There are several of us here who have walked the journey you are taking.

It can take some time, even be a bit of a confused struggle, because the Mormon prism is so different from the Catholic one.

My wife did not have to formally resign from her previous Lutheran congregation when she entered RCIA several years ago… but I have seen other threads on here about there being a “right way” to go about resigning from the Mormon church.

Googling [resigning from mormon church] turns up about 150,000 results.

There is a formal way of resigning if someone decides if they want to. Many do it for a variety of reasons.

Anyone who has only be baptized LDS will have to be baptized when received into the Church.

However, some of us, who were converts to the LDS church were validly baptized previously in other denominations ( I was baptized as a Catholic). If that is the case, chances are there will be no need to be re-baptized

I think there is a bit of confusion here. What the Catholic Church does not recognize is the Mormon baptism.

It does recognize the LDS church and often times they work together when it comes to certain issues.

The Catholic Church is the only Church. Others are recognised as Christian communities, not churches. In the case of Mormons they are not Christians so they are neither a church nor a Christian community.
