Anyone read it? It uses the Interior Castle by St., Therese of Avila as a framework.
I picked it up from a Catholic Library last week.
I notice this writer had bestsellers in America. Would you recommend her? And this book in particular?

She says on this video that she has no affiliation with any one religion. She likes the mystics in all religions.
Which begs the question…why was this book available in a Catholic Library?

I looked up a bio of her on Wikipedia and it mentioned that she co-founded a New Age publishing company…that would give me pause.

When I went on Amazon and “looked inside the book” it seemed to be a New Age version of the Mystical Doctor on Prayer, St. Teresa of Avila.

Perhaps someone can recommend a book that is truly Catholic and uses Catholic terminology.

Catholic libraries can make mistakes. Discernment is needed, and it is good to do some research on the person first.

A Catholic educational background doesn’t necessarily mean all is well.

I guess I should be broad-minded about these things, but “new age” is kind of a red flag for me as well.

I notice “Power of Now” by Tolle in the library the other day. That is definitely new age.

I remember when Tolle was on the Oprah show many years ago.

May we all have the wisdom and discernment that the Lord wants us to have.

Peace,

Dorothy

I was away from the Catholic Church at the time The Power of Now and Eckhart Tolle became popular. He was a very clever writer who synthesised ideas from Christianity and Buddhism and other resources to make a neat package for people to swallow. But now I see him as rather shallow. Christianity and Catholicism aren’t just to be cherry picked to suit the individual. You have to surrender to a living God and allow yourself to be transformed. This is where Tolle stays at a superficial level by just extracting intellectuals truths for his own thesis. It’s all about Tolle, not about God.

Caroline Myss was originally Catholic and even holds theological degrees. But she rejects all the doctrine and dogma now. Only the “jewel” of mysticism is valuable to her. Maybe she could see, that Therese Avilla and The interior Castle was the perfect platform for her broader New Age focus. That it was easier to sell to her readers than all the Christian “rules”. This marketing and packaging of Catholic Mystics is a concern in my view. because writers are diluting truths to suit a modern market.

I agree. We need to pray for them, and continue to pray for ourselves. 🙂

What is a Catholic Library? Parish library? Diocesan library? Something else?
Also, I think the author is known for her endorsement of quasi-religious healing (new age style).

I am not familiar with that book so can’t comment on it. I am, however, familiar with her earlier books. In my new age days, I even attended some of her seminars. At one time she paired up with a former Catholic priest (one who had left the priesthood) to do some presentations, Her emphasis was on self healing and intuitive basis of knowing what was wrong with your body. She used to talk and talk about how she could intuitively sense what was wrong with someone but of course it was all smoke and mirrors as she never did show that she could do what she said, just made claims. Then there was the new age fluff thinking that somehow all your physical problems were due to wrong thinking. So I was never impressed with her.

People donate all sorts of garbage books to the Parish library.

“Christianity and Catholicism aren’t just to be cherry picked to suit the individual.” Yet there are how many denominations in Christianity?

This was the official City Library. Not my parish or a parish.

Have you read the original Interior Castle?

I could only make it into the 5th Mansion before it started getting too abstract for me. So I just re-read 1-4. 🙂

But if someone’s going to read a book that uses another book as a framework, it would be helpful to be aware of the original framework, so that you can recognize changes as they come, and determine whether the change was for the good or for the bad.

I thought ISBN 978-0882704647 was a very readable translation, although I haven’t tried comparing it to other translations.

I’m reading them at the same time. Also a commentary by Carmelite Ruth Burrows which is excellent.
