God gives you the gift of Grace, you cannot take it or order it.
You have Faith in Him, He gives you Grace and you perform works.
Do people work at their marriages? Yes they do and God and Heaven are more important than spouse and marriage so why can you not perform works for God and Heaven but are willing to work at your marriage?
