Does the use of epidural anesthesia during childbirth conflict with Genesis 3:16? This is purely out of curiosity.

Nope! 🙂

At least not according to the Catholic Church…
People may have OPINIONS on this subject… but the Church does NOT have a statement against the use of painkillers during labor/delivery.

you may not realize this but you’re opening a can of worms…
Some will say yes, some will say no. I say no

I say no–and I ‘checked’ on this before having my second child…which an epidural was used. We also shouldn’t eat pork, according to the OT.:o

Didn’t realize it. I actually didn’t know about the procedure until a few moments ago.

Okay, with indoor voices, can someone reconcile the procedure with the Genesis passage?

There have been countless threads about this exact topic already, so you can read up on many peoples individual opinions on the topic, but as previsouly stated, the CHURCH has no position against epidurals, just individual’s opinions that are expressed in the threads…

BTW… Epidurals aren’t the only form of pain relief during childbirth… so we can’t limit the concept to that one form…

No reconciling against scripture is necessary… that’s not it’s intended meaning… otherwise the Church WOULD HAVE made a statement on this! 🙂

anyone who claims that it does must provide authentic church documents and law to back his ridiculous claim

It seems that a “genesis vs epidurals” thread is alluded to in various places, but remains elusive. The search string “genesis epidural” returns no hits. Someone want to link me? If not, that’s okay, this is a boring topic that I’m starting to regret thinking about.

why would pain relief be anti Catholic? Then taking aspirins, muscle relaxers, and the like would fall into the same genre…no?

Genesis 3:16 is a spiritual document and should not be taken as science, but in the allegorical sense of literal scripture reading.

The Church teaches that we come from two parents, Adam and Eve. Is this not also found in Genesis? What differentiates this fact from 3:16?

Well no, it’s not as ridiculous as you’re making it sound. I can’t find a word in scripture that decrees that everyone should have headaches and muscle spasms. On the other hand, Gen 3:16 explicitly says that childbearing is to be painful.

My own experience with epidurals was so miserable that I actually prefer natural childbirth. So from my point of view there is no conflict whatsoever.

Let’s see, the before delivery pain usually is in the back and feet and knees. Then the contractions are painful. The epidural entering the back is painful. The recovery is painful. The lack of sleep is painful. I mean, which part of childbirth is EXACTLY being referred to in Gen 3:16?

I don’t know. Actually, I was hoping someone might be illuminating us on the whole thing. I am marginally disappointed that this does not seem likely to happen.

Epidural entering the back… probably not the intense pangs that are being referred to. In fact probably nothing in the process rivals labor.

Lack of sleep is a stretch, though.
Have you ever had lack of sleep and had to work/childrear other children every day? Maybe some moms don’t experience pain when they lack sleep, but I know that exhaustion brings out the worst in me (and my body).

Gen 3:16 explicitly says that childbearing is to be painful.
Must one be in pain the entire labor? If a woman is in pain until she gets to the hospital, does that fill the pain requirement?

The only way childbirth would not be painful is if a woman was completely knocked out, labor was started artificially, and she didn’t regain consciousness until the baby had been delivered.

Therefore, most women do endure pain in childbirth.
