Has anyone attended the Divine Liturgy at this parish? If so, what are your thoughts?

Thanks,

Mel

Mel,

I have a few times. Have you?

I suppose the question is, what kind of information/thoughts are you looking for?

Thanks and God bless,

Gordo

Hi Gordo,

We are contemplating a move and we would not be unhappy being near a good Byzantine Catholic Church. I am familiar with the Melkites and I have been to many an Orthodox Divine Liturgy. How did you like the way they did the Liturgy? Was it “Latin free” (not that that is a concern of mine). How is it as a community? Good Priest? Homilies? In other words, did you like it? Is it very ethnic? I like ethnic, just not to the degree that people cannot seperate the faith from their culture which my ethnically Orthodox in-laws have a good deal of trouble with.

How is the church itself in appearance?

Thanks much!

Mel

Mel,

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, Fr. Philip Scott is a wonderful priest. But when I attended (both times) there was no singing, as I recall. I do not believe that to be the norm, however. I believe it was just a fluke. But he is a great priest and I enjoyed my conversation with him as well as with a few of the parishioners. They seemed very happy there.

The Melkite parish in Atlanta, St. John Chrysostom’s, however, I have been told is nothing short of incredible. I would highly recommend visiting both, but my hunch (just from what I have been told) that you will probably enjoy the Melkite.

Here is their website.

It is a Church built out of a mansion tied to the Coca-Cola company somehow. Our pastor visits frequently and he enjoys it immensely.

To echo Gordo, they are both excellent parishes with wonderful priests.

Roswell is a parish of mostly Latins coming East, and also a lot of converts. So you do not have the deep ethnicity that you have in most of the Ruthenian Parishs up north, little Slavonic. However, on Easter and Pascha, people drive great distances to be there just because they are Eastern Catholic. It is like being in a Church in the woods in Russia. Here is this grove of pine trees in the middle of a busy urban shopping center - in the middle is church that looks like it stepped out of Russia or the Ukrain some place.

St. Johns is a wonderful ‘ethnic’ parish and is a Middle Eastern people, Arabic, Greek, and English is used. A very interesting Church too, just from it’s history before it became a Melkite Church. It was originly built by the owner of the coca-cola empire. So it has this wonderful ‘atrium’ in which sets the Church. Actually, the floor of the Church is where the swimming pool use to be.

Gordo,

Don’t you ever have business in B’ham. If you are in Atlanta sometime, come on over and say 👋 , we are only about a two hour drive, and I promise you will be :byzsoc:

I’ve been there. The people were inviting and friendly as was the priest. They were a mix of people more influenced by the east or by the west which was evident in who stood or crossed themselves when. On average, the parishioners were eastern and the homily was thoroughly eastern. One of the parishioners talked to me about the revision of the Liturgy and her appreciation for a return to eastern practices. The epistle reading was spoken when I visited. The three cantors did an amazing job going between English, Arabic, and Greek. I would recommend it!

Thanks everyone! I appreciate it. Your posts were very helpful.

Pani Rose,

LOL! Thanks for the invite! If I can come up with a reason, I will make every effort to come down!

At this point in time, unfortunately, I’m flopping across the Atlantic and the Pacific on a regular basis. I would much rather be heading there!

God bless!

Gordo
