For the year 2013 do I place 20+C+M+B+12 or 20+C+M+B+13 on my doors? Anyone know? I’ve seen both. Do we simply use the current year? Want to do this in the morning with the family if you can help me out. We have the blessed chalk and Holy Water already.

Thanks!

I thought so…but I thought there was a chance that they would subtract one year…or something like that…good to know since I already wrote 20+C+M+B+13 all over the place. 😉

What does C M B stand for?

At my parish we wrote +1/6/13+ and I did not have to use blessed chalk.

The house blessing was given at the beginning of the Mass.

Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar – the traditional names of the Magi. 🙂

According to my instruction sheet, or

Christus Mansionem Benedicat----May Christ bless this house.
Yep, that’s also another interpretation I’ve heard. 🙂

We use the blessing given on Fisheaters, and it lists both meanings: fisheaters.com/customschristmas8.html
Thank you! 👍

This is the proper meaning, the names of the magi are just a mnemonic trick to remember it.

The priest at the church I’ve been going to gave out the slip with the blessing and what to do with a piece of blessed chalk, and invited people to use the chalk & blessing. This is at a parish that is Ordinary Form, and he stated during his homily about the tradition, and trying to bring back some traditions that have fallen on the wayside over the years.

I thought mnemonic devices were supposed to be things that you can remember I can only ever remember Caspar.

BTW: Aren’t Epiphany house blessings supposed to be done by the priest? I know our priest is going around doing them. I believe this is the most solemn house blessing, as the priest not only blesses the house with epiphany water, but uses blessed chalk above the door, as well as goes through the house with incense.

Me and my family do this every year-I think its a great custom. Its little things like this that make children grow up with a love for their Faith. I think the reason why so many Catholics who grew up in the past 40 years (like me) have left the Faith, is because they were not raised with the charming cultural, traditional practices that give one an attachment to things. The physicality of the Catholic Church helps people to connect with it-we are physical beings and that’s why we need physical devotions and sacraments.
