I have some Holy Water that was consectrated (?) on the feast of the Epipheny. And I confess I have no idea what that feast is…
The Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Savior of the world. The great feast of Epiphany celebrates the adoration of Jesus by the wise men (magi) from the East, together with his baptism in the Jordan and the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee.212 In the magi, representatives of the neighboring pagan religions, the Gospel sees the first-fruits of the nations, who welcome the good news of salvation through the Incarnation. The magi’s coming to Jerusalem in order to pay homage to the king of the Jews shows that they seek in Israel, in the messianic light of the star of David, the one who will be king of the nations.213 Their coming means that pagans can discover Jesus and worship him as Son of God and Savior of the world only by turning toward the Jews and receiving from them the messianic promise as contained in the Old Testament.214 The Epiphany shows that “the full number of the nations” now takes its “place in the family of the patriarchs,” and acquires Israelitica dignitas215 (are made “worthy of the heritage of Israel”).
At the feast of the Epiphany, we commemorate Christ’s baptism in the Jordan. As Holy Water is a sacramental which recalls our own baptism, it is fitting that it be blessed on this day. It is not, however, any “more holy” due to the day it was blessed.Any idea why there is special significance for having Holy Water that is consecrated on this day?
Thanks again!!!At the feast of the Epiphany, we commemorate Christ’s baptism in the Jordan. As Holy Water is a sacramental which recalls our own baptism, it is fitting that it be blessed on this day. It is not, however, any “more holy” due to the day it was blessed.
Actually, I had bought the container beforehand and had left it in the bag when I was returning something else. She made a comment about it and I said that I was a slacker because I hadn’t taken it to church to fill it up. She offered to fill it up for me and told me all about how it was blessed/consecrated on the feast of the Epipheny and how special it was. Nope, no charge at all. I had no idea what the feast of the Epipheny was, nor what you actually do with Holy Water. Thanks to these forums I have answers to both.I hope the bookstore lady gave you the holy water, and did not charge you, since it is a grave abuse and strictly forbidden to sell blessings and blessed objects for the sake of the blessing. Perhaps she only charged for the container, and the water was free.
