What I don’t understand is why the Bishopess (yes!) of that Diocese took 2 years to take any action!

This reminds me of something W.F. Buckley said years ago.

“The Anglican Church is so eclectic that no one, from the Pope to Mao Tse Tung can say with any real assurance that he is NOT an Anglican.” But maybe becoming a Muslim is too much, after all.

An Episcopal Diocese has “defrocked” one of its priestesses for becoming a Muslim. Other than the fact that they “ordained” a woman in the first place, I’m favourably impressed. Perhaps the Anglican Church isn’t just a glorified country club after all:

Don’t other diocese permit the same thing, though?
Your entire post is uncharitable as you no doubt know. I personally have no issue with your opinion, since your opinion counts for zero, but for your information, all priests in the Anglican/Episcopal Church are priests, we have no “priestesses” as you so derogatorily insinuate. Is this how you like to represent the RC faith?

You’re only point here seems to use this forum as a vehicle to make crude personal remarks about another faith tradition. Shame on you.

I do not see where the op is being mean. People like you try to make it impossible to converse about any religious differences by calling it mean spirited. Shame on you! On a catholic forum most people are against female priests let alone female Bishopes. Does this suprise you. Why do you not start a discussion on this instead of blasting someone for bringing up a something insane about the Episcopal Church. What is very scary is the priest sees no problem with being a Muslim and preaching in a Christian Church.

They were probably waiting to see if she actually converted. I wonder if she was acting as a priestess while wearing a head scarf. That would have been strange for the congregation.

If this is who I think it is she was teaching a college level class and did not pastor a church. The Bishop who covered the school did not have the authority to do anything and it was left to the Bishop who made her a Priest

Glorified Country Club…lol

Let me share my experience just yesterday with you. I was asked by our priest to go to one of our shops out in town to get some information printed up for the Church. I walked into the store with another woman from “St. Country Club”. The woman behind the desk looked at my friend before we spoke and said “I know who you are. You feed me when I was homeless. You are over at St. Country Club” I will tell you that my friend’s eyes and my eyes teared up because it was a very moving experience. Talk about hearing His voice!! By the way, this woman behind the desk is off the streets because of some wonderful Christian that gave her a hand.

I am a proud member of St. Country Club! Praise God!

God Bless!

To call a Anglican priest a “priestess” and to call the Episcopal Church a “country club” is demeaning, uncharitable and meant to be so. Who are you kidding. You don’t want discussion, you want to engage in bashing a non-RC faith tradition.

As to the rest, I believe a certain priest of the RCC thought nothing of claiming the Holocaust was a lie and that is very scary as well. Let’s not continue to reduce this to the mud okay?

I suggest “females in sacerdotal garments”. Simple, elegant and taxonomically accurate.

I’m not seeing the problem with calling her a priestess. There is no such thing as a priest or bishop who is female (like drawing a circle, calling it a square, and trying to sell it as art), so there has to be some other terminology.

As to the country club comment, I do seem to recall that the OP said that it’s NOT just a country club. Apparently converting to islam is the straw that breaks the camel’s back on being an anglican priest(ess)

As to the rest, as you say, that was a bishop who is still not allowed to minister until such time as he recants his position. The controversy was caused by removal of his excommunication because many people don’t understand what excommunication is or the fact that it is NOT simply a political weapon.

Anglicanism has fuzzy boundaries, but not that fuzzy. The bishop’s action was quite right, even though it’s regrettable that it was necessary. Anglican priests (we don’t have an order called “priestesses”) must be able to profess the Nicene Creed sincerely.

All churches have renegade clergy. It would be unfortunate if any of us were to assume the superiority of our own based on the presence of them in others.

one of my favorite sayings is. He who stands in a glass house should not cast stones.

A “denominations” do have there falts with athority figures who get out of line. That wonderful sinful human nature.

regardless, there is no such thing as a female priest. Women are not able to receive powers of ordination. Further, semantically calling a woman “priest” is incorrect, since the word is NOT gender-neutral. A woman would no more be labelled a priest than a male flight attendant would be called stewardess.

Both semantically and theologically, female priests don’t exist and I don’t recognize that catholics should be forced to talk like such an imaginary creature is real.

this is true. and i think that’s the point that the OP was making: celebrating that the church had publically dealt with a renegade clergy member. This defrocking, even if it was of a “priestess” without valid orders anyway, was a GOOD thing on the part of the anglican clergy.

You’re right, and the second the catholic church starts ordaining women as priestesses catholics will probably have to stop pointing out said difference. However, by that point I’ll probably belong to a “completed Jew” sect, so I’ll still say it 😛

I guess it’s a question of how theologically principled you want to be in your language at the potential expense of civility. I belong to a tradition that doesn’t recognize presbyteral confirmation such as one finds in the Roman Rite. I guess I could put “confirmation” in quotes when talking about such rites, but I don’t see the need. Likewise if I’m referring to the Mormon office of priesthood.

It’s just sensitive for us, because “priestess” is the sort of loaded language one typically finds on the kinds of awful polemical sites like Virtuosity, where they like to refer to the primate of the Episcopal Church as “the great whale” and so on. I’m glad you don’t mean it like that. 👍

It has nothing to do with a “female priest”, it has everything to do with a denomination that stands for nothing!

Defrocking a “priest who convert to the Muslim faith” after 2 years is a real courageous stand! To draw the line when a supposed Christian priest disavows Jesus Christ and accepts the lies of a pitiful mortal man, Mohammed.
