An Episcopal Diocese has “defrocked” one of its priestesses for becoming a Muslim. Other than the fact that they “ordained” a woman in the first place, I’m favourably impressed. Perhaps the Anglican Church isn’t just a glorified country club after all:

Don’t other diocese permit the same thing, though?
As a person of the community I couldn’t care if she chose to embrace both Islam and Christianity. As a person of a religious order who represents the church, looks over the welfare of the congregation and provides spiritual direction she must be held at a higher standard. Although Islam and Christianity share some beliefs they do not share enough on what some would consider the most important (Trinity for example). Because of this, her devotion to both religions, and her position could start leading to misrepresentations of the Episcopal faith in which she is hired to represent and defend. This is no different using business as an example where companies do not like an employee to work for another company along with theirs. Although I applaud her in her desire to stay faithful to both religions she was given a choice, she made her decision, and she must except the consequences. I would expect the same outcome no matter the religion because at the end of the day it’s still a business and rules must be followed.

We do share the belief in one God, but Muslims deny the Divinity of Jesus Christ.

That’s kind of a “Show Stopper!”

My statement wasn’t a question. I understand that and was part of the point I was making.

You’re right, and the second the catholic church starts ordaining women as priestesses catholics will probably have to stop pointing out said difference. However, by that point I’ll probably belong to a “completed Jew” sect, so I’ll still say it 😛
You are compleatly right. I would hate to see such a false thing find its way into the Church. I can’t wait to get compleatly home:hammering:

Read this for some insights into “Rev.” Katherine Ragsdale, the New Dean of the Episcopal Divinity School."

She says "ABORTION IS A BLESSING!"
I’d expect nothing less from EDS.

Your entire post is uncharitable as you no doubt know. I personally have no issue with your opinion, since your opinion counts for zero, but for your information, all priests in the Anglican/Episcopal Church are priests, we have no “priestesses” as you so derogatorily insinuate. Is this how you like to represent the RC faith?

You’re only point here seems to use this forum as a vehicle to make crude personal remarks about another faith tradition. Shame on you.
Darn even non-Christian faith traditions called there clergy priestesses. Off the high horse plz.

There’s a difference between “nice” and “charitable”. I can be very charitable while being very mean. For example, to admonish a sinner is a charitable act.

In this case, I think that anything which could shake someone out of that hell-bound communion is perfectly charitable. Of course, if you’ve stuck around this long, there’s probably little hope. 🤷

Actually, none of the “priests” in the Anglican Communion are priests. Anglican orders are “absolutely null and utterly void”.

The Anglican Communion isn’t a “faith tradition”. It’s an old schism, an accident of history, and a bastion of heresy.

Is it not true in the Episcopal Church that the Gender-Confused-Priest would have been out of communion with here schizmatic church as soon as she converted. Sort of an automatic excommunication.

Quoth Leo, in the words of Monsignor Raphael Merry del Val.

All churches have renegade clergy. It would be unfortunate if any of us were to assume the superiority of our own based on the presence of them in others.
Agreed 100%! People of every faith are fallible (although not every faith itself is fallible! :)).

That said, there is no reason why the above topic should not be discussed in a forum like this, but there’s not much point doing it in the context of mud-slinging.

Charity begins at home…

As to the rest, I believe a certain priest of the RCC thought nothing of claiming the Holocaust was a lie and that is very scary as well. Let’s not continue to reduce this to the mud okay?
If you are talking about Bishop Williamson, he is not a “priest of the RCC”. In fact he hasn’t been in full communion with the RCC in over 20 years.
All churches have renegade clergy.
True. To me the big issue here is the Rt. Rev. Vincent Warner, Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese of Olympia, who “accepts Redding as an Episcopal priest and a Muslim”. (See here.)

Why are some clergymen called “right reverend” anyway? That always sounded peculiar to me. Why “right reverend” and not simply “reverend”?

Right Reverend is the proper form of address for an Anglican bishop, as Most Reverend is for a RC bishop. There are other such distinctions.

Thanks, GKC. I knew you would know the answer.🙂

Added: perhaps I should have another go at “Barchester Chronicles”.

I’m not seeing the problem with calling her a priestess. There is no such thing as a priest or bishop who is female (like drawing a circle, calling it a square, and trying to sell it as art), so there has to be some other terminology.
We understand that in your faith tradition, you don’t accept the concept of female priests. I can assure you that in mine, we do, and we call them priests. Priestess is commonly meant to refer to pagan groups. Many nouns are now gender inclusive and this is one of them. There is no question in my mind that the use of the word priestess was meant to be insulting, there are but a very few here who insist on using it to express their disdain for anything different than Roman Catholicism.
As to the country club comment, I do seem to recall that the OP said that it’s NOT just a country club. Apparently converting to islam is the straw that breaks the camel’s back on being an anglican priest(ess)
Read it again, it was derisive and meant to be so quite obviously. Again we have no priestesses. Why do you continue to knowingly insult?
As to the rest, as you say, that was a bishop who is still not allowed to minister until such time as he recants his position. The controversy was caused by removal of his excommunication because many people don’t understand what excommunication is or the fact that it is NOT simply a political weapon.
Nor should the sacraments be so used to punish.

Anglicanism has fuzzy boundaries, but not that fuzzy. The bishop’s action was quite right, even though it’s regrettable that it was necessary. Anglican priests (we don’t have an order called “priestesses”) must be able to profess the Nicene Creed sincerely.

All churches have renegade clergy. It would be unfortunate if any of us were to assume the superiority of our own based on the presence of them in others.
You are quite right. There is no faith tradition without it’s problems and problem clergy.

regardless, there is no such thing as a female priest. Women are not able to receive powers of ordination. Further, semantically calling a woman “priest” is incorrect, since the word is NOT gender-neutral. A woman would no more be labelled a priest than a male flight attendant would be called stewardess.
There is no such thing IN YOUR TRADITION. The RCC does not own the word priest. It most certainly is gender neutral, since my tradition uses the term for both men and women ordained to the priesthood. The dictionary refers to priest as “a person.” There is no gender in ANY of the definitions. There are no longer stewardesses, they are all flight attendants, male and female.
this is true. and i think that’s the point that the OP was making: celebrating that the church had publically dealt with a renegade clergy member. This defrocking, even if it was of a “priestess” without valid orders anyway, was a GOOD thing on the part of the anglican clergy
But as an orthodox RC, you don’t recognize Any Anglican clergy, so stop playing games, you simply do this to irritate.
