Episcopal Installation

In England and Wales, Scotland, and Ireland our cathedrals have a chapter of canons. When a new diocesan bishop is installed, he is installed by the provost of the chapter.

In countries where cathedrals do not have chapters, e.g. Australia, Canada, New Zealand, who installs a new bishop in his cathedra?

In the United States it typically is the Papal Nuncio or the Archbishop of that province, depending on the circumstance.

I think different when the installation doesn’t occur at the cathedral.

In our diocese, both the Nuncio and Cardinal DiNardo–the Metropolitan of the Galveston-Houston Province-- participated in the installation. That seems to be the practice in the Galveston-Houston Province. The Installation was held at the largest church in the diocese, a Marian basilica/shrine. There is a cathedra at the basilica (I don’t know if it’s a papal throne or the bishop’s chair…since it is a minor basilica.)

When the bishop took possession of the Cathedral the next day, the rector of the Cathedral presented the bishop with his cathedral.

Bishops take canonical possession of a diocese not a cathedral.

They can take canonical possession anywhere in the diocese. Sometimes they may do this at a church other than the cathedral because it is a larger church and a greater number of people may attend.

The installation of the bishop may take place at the same time as he takes canonical possession of the diocese or afterwards. It cannot be done first because he must first be the bishop to be installed.

The installation needs to take place at the cathedral because this is where the bishop’s cathedra is located and it is his cathedra in which he is installed.
