Are these two adjectives synonymous? Or are there shades of difference? For example, are the staff at the diocesan office called the episcopal curia or the diocesan curia, or are these terms obsolete and they are simply called the diocesan staff?

Well, technically “episcopal” refers to the bishop where “diocesan” refers to the territory. But they can often be used interchangeably depending on the context.

“Curia” is still the technical term that is used to describe a bishop’s diocesan staff. That’s the term used in canon law. But most people understand what “staff” means more so than “curia”. 🙂
