Episcopalian Vs. Catholic?

So, I , a Catholic, was just engaged to my girlfriend, an Episcopal. We are beginning to plan our wedding, wondering how to work out the officiants. We are both dedicated to our faiths and also to each other. We have discussed conversion and know that neither is ready, but might be possibile in the future. For now and for the wedding, she would prefer to marry in an Episcopal church, hoping that we can go through marriage counseling within both churches and have a Catholic priest present to officiate with the Episcopal priest. confusing, I know.

I think this can be done, but a question remains about the order of the liturgies and what can be done for the Liturgy of the Eucharist, how communion happens, catholics and episcopalians present together, etc, etc. Very confusing, and I wanted to have some idea before we went out to talk to both of our churches.
Hey so I went thought this with my Catholic husband. Really you can’t get any good idea from us here because it depends on your (the Catholic) bishop or how it has to work. Talk to both priests and see whats up. I know though that the Episcopal church and Bishop shouldn’t have a problem…just talk to the priests…they dont bite 😛

Alright so I’ve been running this whole thing by my husband (a Roman Catholic) who’s theological background is in Episcopalian/Catholic relations and he brought up something that I feel is worth mentioning. He said that Episcopalians are backwards looking. That is we always look to the Early Church for leadership (look we can get into that one too if you really want ). Okay so now for how that fits in:
There can be a Catholic/Episcopal discussion, it just has to start in a place most Catholics don’t like starting, the past. If you want to know why Episcopalians do what they do you have to be very comfortable with the Early Church.
Quite frankly, I don’t think Anglicans are any better at being “backwards looking” than we Catholics are (worse, if you’re talking about the ECUSA portion of Anglicanism). But maybe we can help each other it that regard?

During my education to be Episcopalian and to quote my priest at the time “We as Episcopalians do not care what you believe as long as eveyone worships the same”:

As for Catholics: well, all you have to do is read the Catechism…the Church does care what you believe because She cares for your soul.

Perhaps that was in response to a particular issue? Or maybe the priest misunderstood your question?

]No, I’m saying that for the practical, day to day running of Vermont the people look to Bishop Robinson (who by the way knew he was gay and elected him anyway, it isn’t an issue for them in the running of their local churches). Further, like I said spiritual leadership is not found in one person, it is found in the Traditions and traditions of the Church.
That says a lot of the Episcopalians in Vermont. Would you say that if the Church did something a certain way for a couple of thousand years that it would qualify as a tradition? If it did then according to your view that should be what you look to for spiritual leadership regarding that topic or matter. So for example, if the Church ordained men exclusively for all that time and Episcopals disregard that tradition and then say they look to tradition for leadership they have contradicted themselves. What is amazing is they do it all the time and don’t seem to notice. When Catholics read what Anglican/Episcopal leadership says or writes it is incoherent. Things like we are completely separate in communion. If they looked to tradition they would be Catholic.

There can be a Catholic/Episcopal discussion, it just has to start in a place most Catholics don’t like starting, the past. If you want to know why Episcopalians do what they do you have to be very comfortable with the Early Church. The reason many Episcopalians have so many different views is because they don’t see it having mattered before so why does it now. I know that many Catholics view things like gay marriage as important, and they may very well be important issues but they aren’t viewed as formative and fundamental because the Early Christians didn’t care.
Again, this could only come out of the mind of an Episcopal Anglican. It is laughable. The Church throughout her history condemned sexual perversion. To say that eary Christians would not care about gay marriage is insane. It would have been inconceivable to them, but the Church has always condemned sexual deviancy as evil. To claim otherwise is either ignorant or disingenuous.
Further and most importantly I feel that the discussion between Catholics and Episcopalians can happen and ought to happen around the issues we have in common. We have a long history in common, there is much unity on many points that have been over looked for things like gay marriage and women. There is unity, it just may be more fundamental then a lot of people think
Again, with which Episcopalians should we have a discussion?
You don’t know what you believe. Tell the Episcopalians in Fort Worth that female ordination and homosexuality does not matter and did not in the early church. What a ludicrous statement. Have a discussion amongst yourselves and figure it out. We can not help you. You have put yourselves in a shambles.

Unity is commanded of the Church by Christ. We long for unity. Paul teaches that we shoiuld be of one mind. We can not make believe we are. We can discuss common beliefs, but that will not make the controversies go away.

The Episcopal/Anglican church is dying. There are many disaffections. The average age is creeping up. The youth are going away. All the while the internal disputes are tearing things to shreds.

The mechanism to keep unity is the papacy. Without it you inevitably end up in chaos where you can’t even figure out men marry women. Your traditions can not help you from foundering.

That picture is seriously disturbing without the caption.
They want to be taken seriously. They want people to be respectful of them. It is impossible to look at these photos and not see how absurd this group has made itself. They expect Catholics to recognize their farcical orders and “work with” them.

Geez, Harry! Don’t leave me hanging by a thread! Give it to me straight! Let me know where I stand!
Come now, doesn’t anyone here know the Hartman-Lovitz skit …

“I’m lettin’ ya go, Johnny! Your contract’s not being renewed.”

“But…”

“You’re finished Johnny!”

“Whaddya mean?”

“I think you stink!”

“Don’t mince words, Harry. If you’re unhappy with my work, speak up, will you? Tell me now.”

“You’re through Johnny! You’ll never work in this town again!”

“Geez, Harry! Don’t leave me hanging by a thread! Give it to me straight! Let me know where I stand!”

“Johnny, I think you are the worst actor I have ever seen, and I get 500 letters a week telling me the same!”

“O.K., O.K., Harry! But, what’s the word on the street?”

Funny, Anglicans say the same about Rome
As a former Anglican, I would NEVER have been so frivolous as to say the Catholic Church defected from the Anglican Church or that the Roman Church defected from the Catholic Church. Even the Archbishop of Canterbury in my youth (Michael Ramsey) averred that “The Bishop of Rome is the head of the Church on earth.”

Framing a thread title as “Versus” is unnecessary and needlessly divisive. There should be no “versus” among Christians who hold so much in common.

As GKC has pointed out, particularly in the continuum, the ‘catholicity’ of many Anglicans is remarkable, and the catholic theology and practice of many Anglicans (even of some still in the Episcopal Church) is exemplary.

He’s a few crumpets short of an afternoon tea, eh wot.
Williams sees his role as keeping all the crumpets on the tea table. There aren’t many people standing in line for the job because it is impossible. The primacy of the Abp of Canterbury is “first among equals.” Look where that gets you. It means: nobody can tell ME what to do, even if you’re the guy with the biggest point on your hat.

Someone on this thread said that nobody cares what an Anglican believes as long as they use the Prayer Book. That was the position adoped by Queen Elizabeth I when the nation was being torn apart by religious wars.

I guess it begs the question why you are on this subforum when you find our selves so “farsical” as you put it. Apparently you just enjoy going around and making incredibly nasty and ugly remarks against others for the fun of it. I’m sure that is well in keeping with what YOU were taught as a Roman Catholic. And you seriously wonder why people have harsh things to say about Roman Catholics? Your behavior is a poster for people to leave the church for more sane and compassionate environs. Shame on you.

I’m not sure what you point is to me. I am very tired of being insulted here consistently with uncharatible remarks meant to make it so clear that the poster believes the Anglican faith is somehow utterly worthless. To consistently make fun of the tenets of other’s is both unkind and unprofitable. I simply responded to suggest that the poster’s words were unworthy of serious reply, since they were meant to only wound and inflict pain. There is a huge issue here with ugly self-righteousness. While everyone likes to think they have chosen the best faith, there is no need to rub the noses of others in the mud while you gleefully tell me how awful my faith is. We can, as I said, reply in kind, though we have not so far saw a need to “defend” our church by this method.

That sounds very Episcopalian. No one is wrong, or right, and saying otherwise is rude. What do you think about God’s laws of morality? Do they exist? Are they knowable? Does He reveal them to us? I guess anyone or Church that says they know them is rude, unfair and untrue?
You continue to cast aspersions. It seems the only reason you are here. I see no point in further discussion. You are not here to discuss but to fight. Apparently you and some others are very frightened and see the need to assault everyone who doesn’t agree with you. I’m amazed that you are so confident that God agrees only with you. It must be rarefied air up there indeed.

I thank you for the observation.

I must, though with great sadness for his successors to date, agree with you. The current bearer of the title was, spiritual director to a good friend of mine some 30 years ago (seems like yesterday); had the pressures of current circumstances not placed His Grace in so untenable a position, we might have seen a great showing on his watch.

When the Titanic is sinking you can rearrange the deck chairs and keep the band playing (keep the crumpets on the table) or you can find a lifeboat. That is strong language, but if it is true it is also a charitable warning. When the ship is sinking mincing words won’t help. If the ship is sinking, being silent will not help and denying it will not help. The Anglican ship is foundering and breaking up. That was inevitable. If that is true it has to be made clear. It is full of souls dear to God. They need life jackets and boats and rescue. Making believe all is well is cruel.

Its leadership is so lost that it can not figure out and come to agreement that men marry women. It does not get any more ludicrous. These men are supposed to be shepherds of souls. They are the blind misleading the blind. Call it what it is. Please end this farce. How can it be sugar coated? Cardinal Kasper all but said you can not expect us to take you seriously. You can not expect serious dialogue until you come back to sanity.

That is only mean spirited if it is not true.

DANGER RANT FOLLOWS:

I would like to think I know what I’m talking about when it comes to my faith. I would also like to think that I don’t view my faith with rose colored glasses. That being the case:
1: I know the Episcopal church/Anglican Church has its issues, find me a church that does not. I know that ours have been brought to the forefront thanks to some news stories, nevertheless others have issues too.
2: Catholics and Anglicans/Episcopalians have dialogue all the time, it happens when people that come with a true and loving interest in the conversation happen. Look, if the Pope and the ABC can do it, surely we can to.
3: I know that everyone likes to be right, I know the Romans believe with their whole being that they have the fullness of the Faith, thats great, no one wants to take that away from you. No one wants you to not believe your faith. However, you have to meet us half way, you have to put that aside if you want a real conversation. Know you’re right, thats fine, just know we think we are too, the conversation should never become who’s right/who’s wrong but rather…how can we we together grow in the Love of Christ.
4: I went Catholic school, married a Catholic man, go to Mass with him, I love the Roman Catholic Church almost as much mine however it is because of people like the few mean spirited people here that make me so glad to have Church who’s sign says “all are welcome”. I never use to understand why protestants hated Catholics so much…thank you for helping me understand
5: You’ve all said you aren’t being mean spirited, its just the truth we (episcopalians/anglicans are just wrong and you want to bring us to the truth…while again I respect your wanting to share with us, be nice about it. We aren’t going on about the awful parts of the Catholic church and what doesn’t work so why do you do it with us.
6: Anglicans/Episcopalians and the Romans can have discussions that can be are respectful…it forces both sides to accept that we aren’t going to change peoples minds if their hearts are hardened, and being rude hardens peoples hearts.
7: There are so many wonderful people on here, thank you for being wonderful and kind and open to discussion…I just needed to rant…thank you for letting me.
8: FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY THERE IS MORE TO MY CHURCH THEN GAY PEOPLE!!!

End rant

He had a fairly good rep, early on, as I understand it.
