For what it’s worth, I just read you used to be an Anglican on another thread, Gurney. Does it mean anything to you… anything at all… that former Catholics make many of the same accusations to Catholicism that you are making to TEC?

Can’t TEC just be wrong without being Christ hating apostates?

Zach

Or can’t they be even at least partially right 🙂

So what would you consider a valid and proper news source for Episcopal developments? The Episcopal News Service? :p:p:p David Virtue is awesome. It’s amazing how someone becomes “disaffected” when the denomination they belonged to left them behind for secularized liberal values? hmmm…
You beat me to it, Zach. Virtue Online as a news source?😃

Zach, I don’t think anyone has put more words in my mouth than you lately. “Hating apostates?” I don’t remember that remark. You glean a bit too much from my posts. And thanks for researching my past. I haven’t done so for you but I’m flattered ;).

Does it mean anything…anything at all…to me that former Catholics are now anti-Catholic? Not really. I happen to appreciate morality. I like the conservative Anglicans. I like the conservative Lutherans like LCMS and the WELS Lutherans. I like the TAC and ACNA Anglicans. If you observe, I’ve never trashed anyone here for not being Catholic. I have criticized moral teachings. I greatly condemn what your denomination has adopted at the Anaheim Convention. I do indeed believe TEC is wrong. They’re wrong and a half. But did I say you’re all apostates? You do a great job of coming up with slamming hateful remarks for yourself. You don’t need me? Your last few posts have had a bunch of nasty language for yourself that I supposedly said?

You’re absolutely correct, Matt. I already knew that. But my point is that someone who does not intellectually assent to the teachings of the Church can be baptized all they want but it does them no good to be Catholic if they deny major tenants of the faith, right? I’m not wanting you to hit the bricks, trust me. I am not trying or wanting to give you the boot…I mean that. I’m simply saying that if someone agrees more with Orthodoxy and yet he’s a baptized Presbyterian, he should convert to Orthodoxy. If a person is Anglican but does not believe in apostolic succession and wants a more confessional faith, he should go Lutheran. If a person says, 'I believe in mostof the Catholic Church but I think women should be priests, gays should marry, abortion should be legal, etc. etc. then they should go where they feel that truth exists. From what I see, the Episcopal Church is more analogous to your beliefs than Catholicism. If you say, ‘I’m not comfortable with the Pope’s teachings on abortion, gay marriage etc. but I’m going to obey and struggle and pray to be in line with this sacred teaching and be obedient, pray to understand and obey,’ then you should stay Catholic.

I’m less a heathen than these Episcopal friends of ours in here think me to be. My best friend was feeling pressure from his wife, also Episcopalian at the time, to become Catholic. She really really really wanted him to convert. I told him that God loves Him and knows his heart. He would make a fabulous Christian wherever he went. My friend was very much in line with Catholic moral teaching but felt uncomfortable with Marian dogma, infallibility, etc. I told him to stay put, relax, pray. God loves him, period. After a time he and his wife did indeed become Catholic. They’re better Catholics than yours truly.

My favorite people, by and large, in CAF are Orthodox or Catholic. Go look at my friends on here. I have no hatred for individual Episcopalians despite what Zach and the gang believe. I disagree deeply with the theology of the church, don’t condemn each individual member to perdition’s flames. God bless you, too!
Gurney, you suggest I consider moving to TEC. But what about point # 7 here:

vatican.va/roman_curia/pontifical_councils/intrptxt/documents/rc_pc_intrptxt_doc_20060313_actus-formalis_en.html
  1. It remains clear, in any event, that the sacramental bond of belonging to the Body of Christ that is the Church, conferred by the baptismal character, is an ontological and permanent bond which is not lost by reason of any act or fact of defection.
And of course since this was written, Pope Benedict has modified it so even a formal defection process no longer releases someone from Catholic marriage law which is what the former process did.

Thank you for your blessings and again may God bless you as well.

I have attended a q & a forum in the last few months with the presiding bishop and then read the “report” of what was said on Virtue. Let’s just say someone could win Wimbeldon with that kind of spin. I actually went to the forum and even got to ask the bishop some questions of my own to get answers. I talk to my priest and read liturgical materials. I wouldn’t pretend to be qualified to make blanket statements about a church that I have not attended. To be honest the kind of criticisms I’ve seen leveled at TEC on this forum I would have guessed the source anyway. To each his own and to each sheep his shepherd.

By the way, Gurney, I’m not trying to do anything but get a point across. I enjoy a good debate and I think we probably are pretty close in MOST of our view.

God bless.

I literally believe Moses parted the Red Sea. I literally believe all Jesus tells us. I literally believe Elijah was taken away on a chariot.
What am I NOT supposed to take literally? I don’t think Jonah was literally swallowed by a whale. I think the earth formed over a long process, 6 days for God could be millions to us. There are small things I think are allegorical like Job, Jonah, etc.
Just curious, Gurney: why is the parting of the Red Sea any more historical than a Galilean prophet being swallowed by a great fish? They are about equally improbable.

I wonder if you take the story of Sodom and Gomorrah literally. If we glean a good deal of our appreciation of God’s hatred for homosexuality from this text, then what does it say about God’s apparent insouciance regarding Lot’s offer of his virginal daughters to a crowd of sexual predators?
The Church cannot change morality or theology
I would submit to you that the Church has changed her moral teachings on the sin of usury. What was once forbidden absolutely is now acceptable by degree.

Gurney, I suppose I will take your profession of affections for Episcopalians at face value. Can you, however, consider that you don’t exactly come across as such when you say things like… “The Episcopal Church frequently enters pagan territory” despite that simply not being the case. Do you know what you sound like when you say …
“Fruity pagans” are indeed not the norm at ALL parishes in TEC. That would be absurd. But if you talk to 7 out of 10 Episcopalians and ask them about abortion, women’s ordination, gay rights, pre marital sex, and other issues, do you seriously think they’d lean right or moderate? Honestly…
Oh thank goodness. Only 70% of us are pagans! And you continue to imply that my experiences are to be ignored as vanishingly rare, while the claims of a biased, dissaffected Anglican like Virtue are to be taken as Gospel truth. Can you hear yourself?

I’d love for this thread to go quietly into the not-so-good night…

To go through these accusations of Gurney’s one by one…

Paganism: Gurney has already insisted that the actions of nutty Catholics cannot be taken as normative of the Catholic Church. Yet that is exactly what he does for the Episcopal Church! To be clear, there is only one organization that can speak for the Episcopal Church: The General Convention. Not even Bishop Jefferts-Schori. Certainly the General Convention had never endorsed paganism. The actions of “Some parish in Los Angeles,” if we are as fair with TEC as Gurney is with Catholicism, cannot be taken as normative. But, how many Episcopal Church have actually endorsed paganism? Does he submit any evidence that pagan worship is common? Why does he ignore the constant protests from Episcopalians that such claims are just false? This, of all the claims Gurney makes, is the most absurd and most unfair. Seriously, Gurney, just drop it. If you have examples of Episcopalians doing so, then I will condemn them with you. But they are not actions that can be taken as normative to TEC.

Gayness: TEC is indeed reconsidering its stance on homosexuality. Yet acting like it is the central issue of TEC’s mission is silly. We have 2 gay bishops out over 100. If you don’t agree with us, fair enough. But for pete’s sake, grant us the charity to disagree with you while also trusting that we are trying to serve Christ the best we know how.

Girls: Yeah, we have female priests too. This one actually is common past the point of mere toleration. Again, disagree, but be charitable.

Abortion: The Episcopal Church is not pro-abortion. Unlike the Catholic Church, we do not have a body with nothing better to do that proclaim an official Church position on every issue possible. The General Convention does so to some extent, but that is not its primary function. We simply don’t have any body that comments on abortion at all. If you ask Episcopalians, you will probably be surprised to find a wide spectrum of opinion… just like the Catholic Church.

I will conclude by again describing the day to day life of the vast majority of Episcopal parishes. We worship Jesus Christ in the Trinity. We believe and profess the Nicene Creed. We make confession of sins part of our worship. We believe in the Real Presence of the Eucharist. We believe our bishops and priests are in succession from the apostles. This is the life of worship of the Episcopal Church I know. This thread does not do justice to what IS the norm of TEC. What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

Zach

I agree. It’s a lynch mob of Episcopalians jumping a Catholic in a back alley on a Catholic forum. Go figure. At least I’ve given them a target for their angst, Dave.
I’d love for this thread to go quietly into the not-so-good night…

Zach, you need to calm down. You’re getting hysterical. The Episcopal Church on several occasions has worshipped side by side with pagans. It’s a fact. If you want to put your fingers in your ears and say la la la la la and pretend it’s not true, free country, go for it. But they do occasionally show sympathy for paganism.

Can you hear YOURself, Zach? You’re hysterically ranting and raving right back at me on and on in a self-pity crusade targetting your own frustrations fashioning me a bigot. That’s fine.

Do you know what you sound like as well? You’re very good at critiquing my posts despite your protests against judgment and being self-righteous. You’re not a happy camper. I get it.

Perhaps you can meditate upon how you judge me in each post and put words in my mouth and ask yourself how fruitful this exchange has been.

If I am so deeply vile, offensive, hurtful and painful, please put me on ignore. I’m actually asking you, put me on ignore. It’s probably better for us both.
Gurney, I suppose I will take your profession of affections for Episcopalians at face value. Well I’m glad you and Katharine have had nice exchanges and that you’re a fan. I’m not. I detest her greatly. And by the way, how did you ascertain that I’ve never attended an Episcopal Church? You might be suprised, my friend.
I have attended a q & a forum in the last few months with the presiding bishop and then read the “report” of what was said on Virtue. Let’s just say someone could win Wimbeldon with that kind of spin. I actually went to the forum and even got to ask the bishop some questions of my own to get answers. Well Yggdrasil, why don’t we just deep six the whole Bible. That’d be easier than anything. Just call it all fables and mythology a la Zeus and Odin. No pesky morality, authority, or dilemnas. Who gave you the authority and knowledge to discern these Scriptures better than the Fathers, Saints, Bishops, Popes, and great doctors of the Church? I didn’t say that I glean God’s loathing of homosexuality all from Sodom and Gomorrah. Let’s just have a free for all and call the whole thing off, right? What parts will you keep and follow? The easy parts? The parts that don’t challenge our sensibilities? The parts that Oprah, the Media, the LGBT community, Ellen, and the Rainbow Coalition sanction? How do you pick and choose? You keep challenging me, how about you?

You can believe God changes, morphs, and makes morals relative. I don’t. Your loosey-goosey interpretation of Scripture that is very human-centered and secular only reinforces the need for an infallible teaching authority to stave off our own sinful visions.
Just curious, Gurney: why is the parting of the Red Sea any more historical than a Galilean prophet being swallowed by a great fish? They are about equally improbable.

Gurney, you can’t keep claiming the poor defenseless Catholic that is having words put in his mouth any more. I quoted your own posts. I used your own arguments to show that your characterizations of TEC are unfair.

Zach

To go through these accusations of Gurney’s one by one…
We’ve been down this road plenty of times. It’s like a dog chasing its tail. I’m out.
If you have examples of Episcopalians doing so, then I will condemn them with you. But they are not actions that can be taken as normative to TEC.

You are using an argument of numbers. Not buying it. First of all, I’d wager with you that the Catholic Church has infinitely more gay clergy in its ranks. But see, I can admit the weaknesses of my Church. The difference is that homosexuality is not accepted by the Catholic Church as morally acceptable. The TEC has officially condoned openly sodomizing men to be worthy of the priesthood and something to be lauded. I’m simply saying that 2 out of 100 isn’t the problem. It’s the fact that it’s ACCEPTED and ecclesiastically no big woop in TEC now. An active sodomizing Catholic priest would be directed to stop, confess, and repent. The Catholic Church is failing miserably in dealing with sexual predators and homosexual clergy so Catholicism has its own dirty laundry that really really really needs cleaning. But the official position of the Church doesn’t accept any of it as normal at least. And again, I’m NOT acting like it’s the central issue of TEC’s mission. That’s silly. You’re again putting words in my mouth. I never said it was the central issue, it is “an” issue. But it’s an important one that should not be discounted or brushed aside. And once again, for the umpteenth time, I never said YOU as an individual are a hedonistic, evil, horrible man who is not serving Christ in your own way. Again, words in my mouth. I have no doubt you are probably a better man than I. And I have said as much in previous posts. You choose to ignore that.
**I will continue to disagree. This issue is heterodox, reaks of social justice and liberation theology type thinking. I agree with the AMIA Anglican report’s conclusions about women’s ordination, the Orthodox Church’s evaluation and the Roman Catholic evaluation of this very disturbing trend. **
Girls: Yeah, we have female priests too. This one actually is common past the point of mere toleration. Again, disagree, but be charitable.

Wow, now who’s being uncharitable…? 😦 And yes, the TEC is pro-abortion.
Abortion: The Episcopal Church is not pro-abortion. **Unlike the Catholic Church, we do not have a body with nothing better to do that proclaim an official Church position on every issue possible. ** The General Convention does so to some extent, but that is not its primary function. We simply don’t have any body that comments on abortion at all. If you ask Episcopalians, you will probably be surprised to find a wide spectrum of opinion… just like the Catholic Church.

**I know all about what happens at an Episcopal service, Zach. I went to an Episcopal church parish for seven years. If you believe in apostolic succesion, I would highly suggest going back and reading the early fathers, especially men like Ignatius of Antioch, Polycarp, Justin Martyr and other greats who, some of which, lived during the apostolic age and actually were ordained by the apostles. These men did not condone gay marriages, abortion, and especially female ordination. Anyone can lay hands and claim apostolic succession. Living the apostolic deposit of faith is a whole other matter. **

He said, he said Zach. You’re playing the poor persecuted Episcopalian who belongs to a fairly conservative right of center church full of richness, holiness, strong moral character and orthodoxy. This mean big bad wolf of a former Episcopalian turned Catholic, a virtual Sauron, has come and portrayed this holy, fairly conservative, orthodox church as a vile, liberal, leftist heterodox crew and has hurt your feelings. Attack and demean him right back. Make him look deluded and intolerant, a bigot, and someone who has taken a very normal church and made it look bizarre.

Have I ever played a DEFENSELESS little ole’ Catholic? I have defended myself right and left and have no problem answering your posts, Zach. If I were defenseless and pitiful I would’ve drifted off into oblivion and ran away with my tail between my 6’5" legs. You have put plenty of words in my mouth and you know it. You have quoted my posts as well. And where I felt I was uncharitable I made due apologies. I have seen no apologies from any Episcopalians for their harshness and rush to judgment upon me. Frankly, that’s fine. You and I are not going to change any minds.
Gurney, you can’t keep claiming the poor defenseless Catholic that is having words put in his mouth any more. I quoted your own posts. I used your own arguments to show that your characterizations of TEC are unfair.

Zach
