Epistle and Gradual

I’ve seen some TLM where the epistle is read by the priest silently while the schola sings the gradual. Is this okay? It was a Sung Mass (not a low mass). Thank you.

The priest should not be reading the epistle while the choir sings the the Gradual.

According to the pre-1962 Ritus Servandus he was required to read the Epistle while it was chanted by the subdeacon.

According to the 1962 Missal rubrics he should not.

In a Sung Mass (no deacon and subdeacon) there are two options:

1. the priest reads/chants the Epistle - for which then there is no good reason for him to red it again silently
2. anyone who has received at least the order of lector chants the Epistle- but then, the priest either read it simultaneously (pre-1962) or not at all (1962)
