My husband & I are in our 40’s with children. He began suffering from ED months ago, maybe as long ago as last year. He went to the Dr and was prescribed Cialis. These pills don’t always work & give him back pain. I, on the other hand have experienced an increase in desire for marital relations. I have explained this to him. He doesn’t feel there is a problem with our sex life. While I feel that there is a problem, because my needs aren’t being met. In the past, if I said I wasn’t in the mood because I was tired or not feeling good, he would pout and almost cry. To where I would have sex with him so I wouldn’t hurt his feelings. But now I am the one being dissappointed and it’s like my feelings don’t matter. Am I just supposed to suffer? I am discussed other ED treatment options with him and he is not interested. He said he loves me and still desires me but there is nothing he can do about it.

Why does he not see the problem? I am confused by his lack of concern. Have you told him just what you have said here? Just as you lovingly ministered to his physical needs despite your difficulties, he also has an obligation to lovingly ministered to your needs despite his challenges. Could he try to make sure you are satisfied during foreplay, so that he not only has ample time to be ready, but also so that if he is unable to complete the act on that occasion, he is not leaving you frustrated?

That is what I don’t understand. He was always so attentive to my needs before. I don’t understand the change in him. I am concerned that depression has set in because of the ED and that doesn’t help the problem. It only makes it worse. I even took him away for an evening without the kids hoping to rekindle some romance. We don’t go on many dates, but that didn’t work either. I don’t know what to do.

Certainly depression, from any cause, might be a cause of reduced interest in sex. Alternatively, could his (apparent) lack of interest be a “cover” to avoid confronting the reality of the ED?

It could be stress or anxiety causing him to pull away. Has he had his blood pressure checked recently? Is he experiencing any other symptoms? Was there anything that led to the ED to begin with, like an embarrassing moment during the marital act or a time when he felt inadequate? I am asking because ED can have either psychological or physical causes, or both. And a one time failure can lead to a pattern of ED, because performance anxiety can set in. His apparent nonchalance might be his way of disguising his embarrassment. Just some thoughts. I think frank and loving conversation is imperative in this situation, as well as a willingness to try to connect intimately without any expectations of his ability to complete the act. Sometimes a few sweet intimate encounters are necessary to reverse the trend. But he needs to understand your needs and be compassionate, just as you have been with him. Maybe you could try to communicate to him how much you desire intimacy, how much you need him, but that you are willing to be more active and that you won’t judge him. Maybe he just doesn’t understand that wives need their husbands, too. Hope that helps.

Well said. Yes, ED can be embarrassing for men (I’ve avoided it so far, but as I age the odds are not likely to improve). ED is emasculating.

Angelamomof4, please be kind to your husband, as much as you can. This is understandabley very frustrating for you, but any pressure you place on him is likely to be counter-productive. A loving, gentle, and patient approach may be needed here. He has sought treatment, so it is not like he is just ignoring the issue. But treatment for this can be difficult, and may need to be further explored in terms of potential physical and/or mental underlying causes…age itself being one important factor…but also stress/anxiety…and potentially more serious issues such as depression.

I personally find this topic very offensive, there is know one on the forum that is a Doctor that can give this person proper advise, plus we are talking about another person behind there back, what has Erectile Dysfunction got to do with a Catholic Forum, only discussing something private between two people, medical advise should be sought, I find the whole thing disgusting, offensive, and if I was sitting anywhere that this was being discussed I would get up and go, do you think discussing Erectile Dysfunction spiritually uplifting, or do you think someone has a warped idea of what should go on the Catholic Forum, this is not one of them.
Please get over talking about sexual things, if its not this its masturbation, or something else, I find all this “sex” thing as bad as some of the horrible mags which I dont buy out there on the shelves.

To the OP: Testosterone Replacement Therapy is what your husband should look into. That must be done under the care of a physician and after a blood test to determine if he does suffer from low T. Once in a regimen he should be monitored to make sure the dosage is right and to see what type of schedule he will need for his Testosterone shot, i.e., weekly, bi-weekly, tri-weekly, or monthly. This isn’t only used to increase ones libido, it also helps to boost one’s energy levels be they male or female.

Sex is an important element of marriage and the Church doesn’t shy away from discussing it, so why should we? The OP came here hoping for helpful advice, and I hope she gets some.

If you don’t like these topics, perhaps you should refrain from reading the threads. And especially refrain from joining the thread. 😉

God bless.

If you find this topic offensive, then why would you open the thread? Nothing anyone has said is dirty or shameful. I do think it is unkind of you to attempt to shame the OP simply because she is seeking Catholic advice on how to communicate with her husband on a delicate matter. If you would exit a conversation about ED in a face-to-face interaction, what would prevent you from doing the same here? Some people do not have any problem at all advising a worried wife about how to lovingly communicate with her husband on this.

You poor thing! Did someone hold you down and force you to read this?!!!

God created sex. This wife wants it with her HUSBAND. That is is a wonderful thing and this is a perfectly safe place for her to vent her frustration and seek advice.

Your point is reasonable. Perhaps it is best to read the title of the thread, and if the topic is “Erectile Dysfunction”, or anything else that offends, then skip over it.

Some people genuinely need help you know, and there are people on here that want to help and give advice. You can’t always find the perfect advice from drs or even in the confessional, sometimes it helps to hear it from someone whos had the same issues. And what is wrong about having posts on here about masturbation/impurity? There are so so many who need help, encouragement and advice on that one, it’s rife. Especially catholics because Gods always testing our love for him and the devils trying to tempt us constantly.
Maybe don’t click on a post that you can see is going to be of this nature if you find it offensive.

People write in on this forum all the time about sexual issues. You are not the first, believe me when I tell you! We’ve had people who experience same-sex attraction, those who struggle with issues impurity, you name it, it’s here! Why would this be any different?

I’m glad you felt comfortable enough to trust us to open up about this very personal matter and care enough to look for solutions. A lot of others get tired of marriage, have problems, go out and have an affair, divorce. You are talking about this, and hope someone can be of help.

Further, you are probably not the only one with this very same problem. Right at this moment, there is no doubt someone in this very same situation who is waiting to see what the people will respond. That’s the beauty of CA.

Hail Mary, Full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blest is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. :bible1:

What’s particularly difficult about your situation is that he has tried medication. Well, has he gone back to his doctor and said…“This medication doesn’t work very well and gives me back pain?”

A lot of people have difficulty with a medication and give up saying they have “tried”. I’ve seen this especially, also, in mental health. Someone will say they “tried” and that it “didn’t work”. My next question will be to determine exactly how hard they tried.

For instance, if someone takes one medication, have side effects and give up, I hardly even consider that an attempt! Well, it’s just that we’re all so individual. I know we call medicine a “science”, but give one medication to one person…it works like a charm. Give it to another, and it can cause a side effect.

It’s critical to GO BACK to the doctor and say…this wasn’t working well. I happen to know that there are usually a ton of other medications they can use! Why not ask him to see if there is another he can try. With another, he might not have that side effect, and who knows, it could be more effective.

Further, often a doctor will start a patient out on the lowest possible dosage, anyway. You go back, and they can increase it, as is needed, but he would need to have better communication.

I used to interpret in mental health, and we saw this all the time. A lot of people would leave, throwing up their hands. However, those who persisted were the ones who did best, in my opinion.

They would come back and say, “Doctor, this didn’t work well. In fact, I’m WORSE!” He would often say, “That’s normal…give it 2-6 weeks. If, after 2-6 weeks, it’s still not working, we can change the medication and try another”.

It’s trial and error, in a way. If you want to solve this, persistance is key. So, my suggestion would be to go back to the doctor, tell him and see what he says.

Oh yeah, and as I say, they typically start low and gradually increase the dosage, as needed, another thing.

Good luck!

Celtic, why, if the OP has a sincere question, is it necessary that she/we get over talking about sexual things? If it’s a sincere question and asked in a tasteful manner, then what’s the issue? Yes it’s good to discuss spiritual things, but sex is a big topic in Catholic marriages, and people are hesitant to discuss them with family and friends, so a Catholic forum is a good option. If things get out of hand, the moderators can close or delete the thread.

I’m kinda shaking my head as to why you see questions and topics related to sex as bad as the magazines on the shelves…huh?

The main cause of his ED is his diabetes.

I appreciate all the encouraging advice. I will have to ask him if his testosterone levels were checked. Perhaps another medication would work better.

I apologize for causing offense Celtic Maiden but the subject matter was very clear in the title of the thread. I came here seeking a Catholic perspective. I can’t talk to my mother about this, she never even discussed the facts of life with me. I don’t know anyone personally, that has dealt with this struggle. My husband and I are not the only two people on earth dealing with this, so hopefully others can benefit from some of the kind suggestions that the caring people in this forum have tastefully posted here.

It might be appropriate that you accompany your husband to the doctor on the next visit?

Ah, diabetes. That’s explains a bit more. Diabetes, and particularly poorly controlled diabetes, affects the blood vessels and causes ED at a younger age. Diabetics don’t always respond to Viagra, Cialis, etc. as well as those who don’t have diabetes. And if you read the information that comes with those medications, you’ll find that, at least with Viagra, as many as 25% of “normal” men don’t respond to the medication.

I’m in the same boat as you. He was in his late 40s when diagnosed with diabetes. One of the symptoms was ED. It improved for a while when he was diligent with diet, exercise and meds but once he started feeling a lot better he started acting as though he was cured rather than having a chronic condition. Less diligence meant the ED returned and about 10 years in I had to face the fact that our sex life was over. It hurt because he didn’t seem to think that was a big deal. Viagra didn’t work and he has no interest in trying anything else.

There are many posts from husbands concerned about wives who do not have interest, are afraid, or have a medical condition that makes sex/pregnancy difficult or concerning.

Often the only advice we can give is that the husband has to be gentle and patient with his wife. OP, I advise you the same. Your husband has a more serious medical condition than ED.

Diabetes can be very dangerous and affect many other health issues. I am sure you are very aware of that. My reccomendation is to do all you can to improve his diabetes outlook. Accompany him to dr visits, support his diet and exercise regimes, encourage him to take his medication. These efforts will show your love, will improve his overall health, and may help improve his ED problems.

Please do consult again with his doctor as a first priority.
