God willing, we will be starting an ESL Ministry at my parish. We are looking for a faith based program so we can educate and evangelize our people at the same time. Do any of you know of a program we might use?

We don’t have a formal ESL program, but we make assisting new families learning English a priority, as well as communication in both languages. since children here are mainstreamed into English only classrooms after their first year we try to actively assist their Eng learning.

the situation we see most commonly is parents (or grandparents) Spanish only, children learning English in school. We use bi-lingual RE textbooks, have parents attend with their children, with homework assignments, so in the course of helping the children parents pick up English. we use Creemos/We Believe from Sadlier because it is the only one with a bilingual catechist guide and bilingual books at all levels. sacramental supplements are also bilingual

Some other bilingual RE resources, I assume that is what you are looking for
Journey of Faith/Camino de Fe from Liguori, for adults, youth and children. companion book is Handbook for Today’s Catholic (Manual Catolica de Hoy) with prayers, practices, sacraments, beliefs etc. summarized, you need to buy one of each.

Our Sunday Visitor publishes Catholic Parent know-how 8-page booklets for sacramental prep in both Eng and Spanish, as does Liguori, and these programs are where most of my families needing ESL end up.

a good bilingual bible is the GNT/Dios habla hoy one volume, both languages from the American Bible Society (Catholic edition is blue)

Amigos de Jesus from Claretian Publications has a bilingual gospel based weekly (reproducible) with a page for children, parents and catechist.
the companion, also from CP is Nuestra Parroquia, has gospel-based reflection, seasonal material, devotions etc, also bilingual. they also have bilingual pamphlets on topics such as Lent, Advent, Creed and similar topics.

Celebrating the Lectionary has a gospel-based handout for faith sharing, bilingual, but a little skimpy for your teaching purposes.

just a general note on Spanish language or bilingual resources from mainstream “Catholic” publishers. Most of the more orthodox reliable publishers have been slow to get on the bandwagon, and more liberal even dissenting publishers have the lead in producing these materials, so be selective. I would not be using Amigos and Nuestra except the Spanish speaking pastoral leaders in the parish use it, and there is just not a big selection.

Disciples in Mission, RENEW and most of the other renewal or evangelization “programs” now have Spanish and bilingual resources, so options are growing.

Peace and Mercy,
My name is Fábio, I’m member of the Catholic Community in Brazil. I’m learning English alone. I’d want to study English with a Catholic.
