What is being described here is, of course, the beginning of the spiritual journey as described by the great mystic Doctor’s of the Church…OK, I understand what you’re saying but I think in any case that fear in general lessens as love grows-and love for God grows as our knowledge of Him (our actually knowing Him) grows. And by “fear” I’m not meaning the sense of awe which would always be called for -unavoidable, in fact. I think what St Basil said can apply here:
If we turn away from evil out of fear of punishment, we are in the position of slaves. If we pursue the enticement of wages, . . . we resemble mercenaries. Finally if we obey for the sake of the good itself and out of love for him who commands . . . we are in the position of children.
We move from fear (the beginning of wisdom) to Love.
