What is everybody’s opinion on essential oils ? Like helping to stay calm be happy ?

I sprinkle lavender essential oil on my pillows.
I don’t know if it actually makes me sleep better, but I enjoy the fragrance.

However, some essential oils trigger allergies in certain people, so use carefully.

There is little to no evidence they have health benefits. I’d use if you want a nice smelling home but for that reason only.

The tactics and fear mongering many sellers use to push oils is scary. Most of them are MLM schemes (aka pyramid sellers) There is a reason pharmaceutical companies don’t sell them as a genuine medication. There are no notable health benefits for them to market.

WD-40 is excellent. A sweet aroma too! I enjoy spraying it inside corroded padlocks and then lighting them on fire. It seems to work :man_shrugging:t2:

I use one blend of essential oils after it was recommended by one of my mother’s physical therapists. It works for me.

I like essential oils! Especially lavender, a blend of citrus, and lemongrass.

Not sure about the effect on mood, but my sister made a blend up for me to try for muscle pain - I started out sceptical but it really works a treat.

There are some things that the oils can help with but overall they are HIGHLY overrated. I enjoy Lavender and peppermint for their scent. I like to put a couple drops of peppermint in the coffee grounds to make peppermint flavored coffee 🙂 . Peppermint can also help with headaches and nausea. Some of them are highly irritating to certain people despite mixing them correctly with a carrier oil. It just depends. I tend to break out in a rash if I use any citrus oils.

It’s also excellent to spray on wasp nests. Just make sure you move away fast in case you miss some. Most of them will drop like rocks.

I didn’t know that!
I remember years ago someone telling me that talcum powder was good for getting rid of ants. However, I read some time ago that it’s frowned upon because it’s cruel. I can imagine it must put a crimp in their style somewhat.

Essential oils are essentially useless. I’d also stay far far away from pyramid schemes like young living and doterra. 99% of people who get involved in MLMs lose money

Nice smells smell nice. The benefit is mostly just mental. That’s like saying TVs aid in cancer treatment because stress drops when someone is distracted from pain. Actually using essential oils to treat an illness in place of real medicine is a 1-way ticket to an early grave

Sorry. I get really twitchy about alternative medicine. I have an aunt that’s really caught up in this stuff so I get aggressive way too fast about it

Exactly right; and there are some that have been proven effective against MRSA infections. They are not all snake-oil.

you’re not the only one who is fed up with the alt med hype 😉

I’ve posted before how my field (massage therapy) is overrun with it. I like essential oils b/c I like the smell…there is some evidence that the chemical properties they have can help with certain things. People tend to forget that everything is made up of chemicals…medicine has the added benefit of being regulated…herbs and oils do not…there is no regulating body to determine how pure an EO is. and yes stay far far away from the MLM variety…
