Esther and Jerry Hicks vs Catholicism

I just visited my brother who is a well to do, intelligent, retired doctor and he was all excited by the “truth” he has discovered. It involves past life regression therapy,reincarnation and positive thinking as written about by Brian Weiss, Esther and Jerry Hicks, and Michael Newton. All of this he says totally goes along with the Catholic Faith and other religions as written by Christopher M. Bache from Notre Dame. He believes he is in a group of Masters lead by Abraham and it includes Jesus and Ghandi. He said he has had over 4,000 lives and that one of them was as the apostle St. Andrew. He says there is no such thing as the devil or hell and that Jesus was never tempted in the desert. He is so happy now that everything makes sense and he can understand everything as God does and even talked about being able to create things. He is a very powerful and influential person. I don’t know that anything I say would bring him out of this, but what should I do? I told him it was great if he found what he needed, but that I have faith and I don’t need any of that. I felt the devil had gotten to him, but how do I argue that with him if he doesn’t believe the devil exists? He believes in only positive thoughts so I don’t think he’ll listen to me as it’s contrary to what he believes at this point. He still goes to the Catholic Church every week. What is my obligation as his sister and as a Catholic? He’s always been considered the smart one and lives closest to my father. I’m afraid to do anything that might shut down future communication because all the siblings will have to work together in the future as my Dad’s health continues to fail. HELP!
 
Pray for him. Stay away. I’ve seen this kind of thing many times before.
 
The only thing you can do for him is pray, pray, pray! The rosary & divne mercy chaplet on his conversion to truth.

Also it may be prudent to find out if he has any influence over your father in regards to this new found truth of his.

I was wondering, how did he discover this “truth”? Was it in a dream? Was it just from the writings of these people?
 
I’m not sure. He has read the books and listened to the CD’s and DVD’s and gone to sessions with a past life regression therapist for a type of hypnosis. He has also gone to seminars with Esther and Jerry Hicks and has spoken with Abraham"personally". I believe Abraham channels through Esther and people can ask all sorts of questions on how to handle situations in life and the afterlife. He spoke about how others have recounted these other lives in great detail while being regressed and these were recorded. He seems to have bought into all the twisting of scripture and the psuedoscientific explanations.On the Hicks’ website they state that they “want to lead to the answers and have you attract piles of money, radiant health and delicious relationships.”

Do you have a link to that quote?

There are books and DVD’s that explain their beliefs. I watched the DVD labeled “Abraham - the Secret behind the Secret”. I didn’t see any of this kind of material in it. In this DVD and in their book, “The Law of Attraction” they discuss the teachings of Abraham, which is a name given to the many enlightened beings whom speak through Esther.

There is a difference betwen “The Secret” and “The Law of Attraction”. Though the Hicks began working with others on “The Secret”, they eventually withdrew from the project because they felt that the teachings were too focused on attracting money instead of building their character and concentrating on spiritual things.

Your obligation is to pray for your brother. This is very sad as he has been led astray. I sure you already know that all of this new age channeling nonsense is nothing but doctrines of demons. It’s amazing how many otherwise very intelligent people fall for it.
Ask God to work on his heart and bring him back to the faith.

I find it interesting that when people go to physic (sp) or people who teach past life regression. That their customers or followers are always told that in at least one life they were someone of importance. In your brothers case he was a master being lead by Abraham not just an ordinary run of the mill disciple. When ever I read about these people they were/are always someone like Caesar or king Henry. And I have lost count of how many followers of these sort of beliefs use to be Cleopatra. True I am not a historian, but my basic high school education taught me there was only one Cleopatra. On this masters thing. I might have to read up on the OT. Because I’m fairly sure Abraham didn’t mingle with Jesus or Ghandi. Nor do I remember him leading any kind of masters. Maybe you should ask your brother how these people got their information. Or indeed where. And attended a meeting with him.

That’s what I thought.

Think about it…if the law of attraction works, and the person is full of greed for money with no amount of responsibility, they will reap what they sow. That’s a Biblical principle.

No amount of you trying to talk your family member out of this will help. You should do as others have said and pray fervently. If you shun him you will make it worse. Frankly, you have to love your brother through this and keep communication open.

i understand what you are saying. my cousin in brasil he is also a catholic and he told of this book Secret and he showed interest on it. what amazes me is how many temptations come into the lives of catholics and if they do not know the faith well they most likely will believe it and fall for it.
perhaps you can lovely tell your brother to read something on internet from catholics expert on this subject that may help at least put doubt in his mind.
 
I agree with those who say pray for him. The only other thing I think you can do at this point is make it absolutely clear to him that despite what he thinks, his belief in past lives is totally opposed to Catholic teaching. It may, unfortunately, drive him further away from the church, but it might also make him reconsider his belief. At the very least, it might stop him from confusing others into believing that these opposed beliefs are compatible.

I tried to read the Hicks’ books. What bugged me most was the introduction. Esther described her channeling experience as her teeth buzzing, her nose making movements in the air. This is either FAKE or demonic possession. And, whether the Hicks know it or not, they are messing with demons. I didn’t like having the books in my house- they just reeked of weird evil-ness.

I listened to Esther’s voice via internet clip. Her voice changes drastically when she channels the spirits. Either she’s faking it or she’s being controlled by a demon.

Please share this with your brother. I will pray for him. Get some Spiritual Warfare prayers.

Wow, I know this is an old thread but I just googled this topic as I just got this book called The Vortex on Audible and started listening and thought, “I was wondering what the Catholic Church’s take is on this? It sounds a little demonic?..” or am I a kook?" Thank you for writing this. It is amazing how the devil mixes in a little truth to send you down the wrong path. The key is we are always set up to be equal to God which was Satan’s great fall, he just couldn’t take being the #1 Angel, that wasn’t good enough, he wanted to be God, that was his conceit, his down fall. So you can see his handwriting all over this when you look closely, but it looks so good, so seductive, so easy, we’ll be like God’s, Jesus was never tempted… wow… There is no Devil thats the biggest lie of all. I am going to delete it off my Ipad! Thank you and God Bless!!!
