In the prayers for the Church the priest says: “and for all orthodox believers and all who profess the Catholic and Apostolic faith.”

Who are the orthodox in this instance? I was studying the mass and when I came across this line, I was torn between two possibilities: 1) the Orthodox Church and 2) those who faithfully hold the true faith

I’m leaning towards #2, but would like some quick verification, the priest isn’t talking about the Orthodox Church is he? And if he is when did it come about?

It is #2: It refers to those who hold to the true faith. That would exclude the heretical “Orthodox” who reject numerous infallible dogmas.

It’s #2 but doesn’t exclude #1. And BTW, contrary to some opinions, the Orthodox are not, and have never been, considered heretics. Some will dispute that, and to those I suggest a query to the Holy Office.

A heretic is a one who rejects a defined dogma. The so called Orthodox reject Papal Infallibility, the Primacy of the Pope, the Immaculate Conception among other dogmas. Therefore the Orthodox are, by definition, heretics.

If you still maintain that the Orthodox are not heretic, I would ask you if you belive the Jehovahs Witnesses to be heretics? And if so, why?

That last sentence of yours is so absurd that it would be laughable if it weren’t so sad. But whatever. Believe what you want. I don’t care.

Why is it sad to ask you if you consider the Jehovah’s Witnesses to be heretics? On what basis would you consider them to be heretics? And if them, why not the Orthodox?

I know the Jehovah’s Witnesses are heretics. How do I know that? I know it in the exact same way I know that the Orthodox are heretics: Because they deny dogmas of the faith. Denial of a dogma makes a person a heretic.

But you do not think the Orthodox - who deny dogmas of the faith - are heretics. Therefore, on what basis would you consider the Jehovah’s Witnesses, or the Mormons (both of which call themselves Christians), to be heretics?

If, in your opinion, denying a dogma does not make someone a heretic, why in the world would you consider the JW’s to be in heresy?
