MADRID, Spain - The Basque separatist group ETA on Wednesday announced a permanent cease-fire, bringing a dramatic end to a decades-long campaign of violence and closing the door on one of Western Europe’s last active armed separatist movements.

In a statement sent to television and newspaper outlets, ETA said it “has decided to declare a permanent cease fire as of March 24, 2006.” “The aim of (the cease-fire) is to promote a democratic process in the Basque country and to build a new framework in which our rights as a people will be recognized,” the statement said. “ETA also calls on the Spanish and French authorities to respond positively to this new situation, leaving their repressive ways behind.”

Like an Spanish I want to say, that they are terrorists, not separatists.
And like other truces, this will be a defeat, because they want the autodetermination from Spain. And this is unaceptable.

I,as a native Basque(Donosti-San Sebastian)couldn’t be happier for such news.:clapping: I believe that our own people has been one of the most affected by ETA,many of our own had been murdered, dissapeared in all this time.I pray this is a definitive stop on fire and violence, and that hopefully they came to their senses and they won’t go back to their violent spree.Again,I feel happy about this news,:bounce: and I hope and pray peace can be brought to many people that has suffered enough.

Isn’t there hope they will go down the route of trying to achieve what they want through other means though? Like the IRA have now done? They still want a united Ireland, they just don’t blow things up anymore in an attempt to force us to give it to them.

I don´t like the north Ireland process, the prisoners have to stay in prisons, because they are terrorists and they have killed people, and the victims haven´t killed members of ETA, they have trusted in justice, the state can´t give power to terrorism like ETA.
The autodetermination, in a united country is useless, because in a democracy the soberany is in the spanish people, not only in the basques. Greetings

There are some seemingly unfair aspects - but it does seem to be working.

Well, yes, that is a difference - could some form of devolution work, like Scotland or Wales?

Of course, the peace is positive in Nothern Ireland, but I couldn´t stand that prisoners would be free, they are killers, it´s important and necesary the forgiveness but the justice is important too.
Respect what you say, well, in Basque Country there are a huge autonomy, with taxes for them, education, health, autonomic police and almost all things.
When I heard members of ETA comparing this with Nothern Ireland, I say, well, you want the same autonomy that Nothern Ireland, and of course, it´s suspended when you aren´t good, but I can imagine their answer “you are a fascist” well, being ETA a marxist organisation is a good calificative.
