Ethics of where things are purchased?

There are other ways to reserch the topic, other than buying a publication on “how to.”

Does anyone believe that the site on which the book appears is not already monitored? It has to be a specific site; I think I could even guess the site where such a book would appear.

The FBI has an entire division devoted to such activities, including agents who pose as underage children to catch pedophiles in chat rooms, etc. If they are actively searching them out, what makes anyone think that they don’t already know of the existence of such a book? And, if my guess is correct, they are monitoring that site as well.

I would not purchase such a book.

Limitations on free speech are dangerous. Period. Once you start limiting it where does it end? It is a very slippery slope.
Your free speech is already limited my dear fellow. I’d wager you’re just not aware of it because it’s very subtle. 🙂

I understand you see it as a slippery slope but if you trust your government it’s really not. So I suppose the question is, do you think your government is in place to protect you and your rights? OR do you feel it’s out to get you? BUT that’s another topic for another day so it’s probably best left for a different thread.

OP: I wouldn’t purchase the book. I don’t know if it’s morally wrong to do so but I know I couldn’t do it.

Is it in place to protect my rights? Ideally yes. Is that how it actually works? No. I don’t feel the government is out to get me, but the less government is involved in my life the better.

The purpose of this limitation on your rights is that the rights of children trump your right to free speech or association and freedom from government censorship. In fact, there are no absolute rights…

Children cannot protect themselves so your rights as an adult to buy any such material is canceled by the rights that future children have that they not be victimized by the descriptions in this book.

I further guess that this book is carried in no library and carried by no legitimate book seller. The place that has the book is immoral and so is the book – possibly illegal too. There are certainly safer ways to obtain the information that the OP requires to do his research – legitimate sites and books. Not “how to.” He can use secondary sources without venturing into what is immoral (support for an illegal activity by purchasing a book).

Rather than be concerned that my rights to own the book is being infringed upon, I would be more concerned to find my name on some “list” as having had any association with a group that would publish such a “how to.”

I’m not American.

Some things in this country ARE illegal. If the action is illegal why should a book that details how to get away with the illegal action be legal? That makes no sense.

Child porn is illegal. Why should a book that teaches one how to steal children for the purpose of making your own child pornography be legal?

Murder is illegal. Why should a book that teaches one how to successfully get away with murder be legal?

First Amendment Rights has a limit I’d suspect, although not being American I don’t know. 🤷
Free Speech, I’m afraid. Free Speech is almost a religion in itself in the US. There’s a book (unnamed here to avoid intentionally referencing it, PM me if you have legit reasons to know of it) that’s been available here for 40 years and concerns itself primarily with how-to steps to commit various crimes. Nabokov’s “Lolita” is arguably textual child porn per many moral systems, but it is apparently legal.
