Hi,
I would be interested in your opinion on the concept of ‘ethnic parishes’ — that is parishes dedicated to the pastoral needs of a specific ethnicity. At one time in the US the Church was very much divided according to nationality - one was a Irish/Italian/German/Polish Catholic and worshipped with ethnic fellows. In the 50s it was considered almost a ‘mixed marriage’ for (say) an Italian and an Irish Catholic to wed.
Do ‘ethnic parishes’ contradict the universality of the Church or are they necessary to cater for the distinct pastoral needs of different nationalities? Should people worship according to their ethnic group? Is it the business of the Church to preserve the cultural heritage of Catholic immigrants? Or should Catholic immigrants be encouraged to assimilate with Catholics of the host nation?
